Thanks so much for joining tell us more about spurlock's career and the documentary films he'll be remembered for. Yeah, good afternoon, leena. So morgan spurlock died at the age of 53 from complications of cancer. Most notably known. >> For his documentary that was released 20 years ago. A mega hit called super size me. I'm sure many of you remember it. Well, it was a big hit making 22 million dollars on a $65,000 budget in the premise was spurlock lived on a diet of mcdonald's for an entire month. Checking in with the doctors and health professionals on the impact it had on his body. The rules of the game or that he could not eat anything but mcdonald's. And if they offered to supersize it, he would have to say yes, it was nominated for an oscar for best documentary and really change the in many ways for one it to change how documentaries we're told a it used to be kind of cut and dry form of storytelling, but he really inserted himself as a character, as a sort of a guinea pig in his own little experiment and documented it him and michael moore, we're really at the forefront of that. And then in another way, it really put a microscope on the fast food industry and the obesity epidemic in america. Afterwards, a big donald's got rid of it. Supersize menu leena as well you provided more healthier options. Have a listen to what one pop culture analysts had to say about the impact spurlock had. >> The documentary as a form, people always take it to be truth but there's always sort of a certain construction when it comes to going to documentary filming. There's always a certain level of fiction. Well, in the footsteps of michael moore, morgan spurlock is someone who kind he created a sort of self mythologizing in it. You know, he became an actor in his own documentary and where wait, wait, you know, like a documentary becomes a sort of folksy adventure with a touch of fiction. >> And we've heard from a morgan spurlock's brother lena saying that morgan gave so much to his heart art ideas and generosity today. Today the world has lost a true creative genius and a special man. Proud to have worked together with him. >> Ok, calm out here. Really took aim at the eating habits of americans. We all remember that documentary. Did any of that work have lasting yeah, it's a great questions. So you know, the new york did a deep dive to seeing that it was the 20th anniversary of the film not too long ago, just earlier this year. And it really found that to in the overall scale of things. Macdonald's. >> Seems to have won the battle, although there was backlash initially for a few years afterward, mcdonald's really was able to rebound is is very profitable and was able to really use a top influences and and pop culture figures to really up its branding as in the article includes a study that says most of their top selling items are the highest calorie items. And the healthier options seem to be more of a pr effort from here onwards. But let's not forget that, you sorry. Also making use ontarians will soon be able to buy beer, wine cider and ready to drink alcohol at corner stores. The province announcing today it is moved up its plan to expand alcohol sales with availability at convenience stores coming on september 5th. Now grocery stores already with licenses will be able to sell larger cases of beer as of august. 1st. And then a few months later, by the end of october, more big box stores will be able to sell the lower alcohol beverages like beer and wine. The sped-up plan, it's going to cost taxpayers though, to the tune of 225 million dollars. This is to help out the beer store with the transition as well as to give a discount to convenience stores. >> As of october 31st, every convenience, grocery and big box store in ontario will be able to sell beer cider wine and ready to drink alcoholic beverages as we enter this new marketplace. The beer store and the lcbo. We'll continue to play a big role spirits like vodka, gin and whisky will continue to be sold at the lcbo. The beer store will remain active and distribution recycling. And as a valid retailer. >> And some of the people we spoke with today support the expansion plan.

>> Yeah, I don't see any problem with I know that quebec and that's how they do it, haven't heard anything from my friends over there and my some of my friends who moved to they considered that as a pro for moving to quebec. They say, you know, you can buy beer anywhere over there. So that's why they wanted >> So I think, you know, it's copy that active option for a lot of people. I think every gives an opportunity for ever going to be outside. >> So yeah, we're looking forward to. >> Well, be comedians, but are there going to be restrictions on like our isn't like things like that. Buying on holidays sure. >> And ctv political commentator scott reid. Things premier doug ford believes expanding alcohol sales will be popular with voters. >> Doug ford loves nothing more than peddling the beer story. And you know, it's, it's the beer store of your story and it's worked well for him, you know, buck-a-beer in the original 2014 election campaign beer quarters, he's going to get it. But you see the price, you got to pay 225 million dollars to the largest breweries, multinational breweries in the world. And so we're going to pay more to what may be paying more for that case of beer in a corner store, but it's popular. People would like that that community shake their head and say what we have already they got quebec, it seems ridiculous. Let's get it. So we're going to get it. >> And the centre for addiction and mental health released a statement that says in part camh is disappointed that the provincial government has chosen convenience over the health and well-being of ontarians. There are already more than six-thousand alcohol attributable deaths a year in ontario and the changes announced today will significantly increase that number. The main driver of alcohol related harm is convenience. Decades of research show that increased ease of access leads to more consumption. And in turn, more harm. 3:34 26 degrees got an early look at the roads this afternoon. For that, we turn to traffic specialist azalea hart. Yeah, we're looking at a significant crash that just happened on the eastbound gardiner before jameson. >> They just turned off the cameras, unfortunately. But there's a car on its side. We can take a look at the back up right now. So 2 left lanes are blocked. I it's causing significant delays in both directions on the gardener at this time. Cameras do over onto the northbound dvp. Police say the 23 month-old boy was rushed to a local hospital and then airlifted to a toronto trauma centre, but later died. The circumstances of the incident remain under investigation. It's not exactly clear if any charges will be late. The university of toronto was given pro-palestinian protesters 24 hours to consider its latest offer and is asking that they leave the encampment. Cp24 steve ryan is at u of t and joins us live with the latest as the clock ticks tab. These protesters have accused the school negotiating in bad faith and now they're providing an update this afternoon. Steve. >> Yeah, that's right. And we heard from some of the student demonstrators who are part of this encampment. They've been so may the second a press conference at 11 o'clock this morning. And they talk that meeting that they had with the university yesterday and they thought that was an ultimatum that was given by the university and ultimatum said that day meeting some of the said demonstrators can have a seat at the table in any future investments that the school might make but they will have to tear down this encampment and leave within a 24 hour period. And the school also said that they're not cutting any ties with israeli university. So the dems service, you're felt that that this was not in negotiations good faith. But when asked and I my colleagues whether or not they would abide by that. 24 hours to get out in the 24 hours would expire at 4:00pm today. They did not know what they're going to do at the time. And they said they were still room, they were still reviewing the documents that the school had provided. And just before we went to air, I

have been notified by the organizers, one of the organizers that that there are going to provide an update to the media. That's the students that going provide an update to the media at 4:00pm. So at that time I'm assuming we're going to learn whether or not they're going to leave the camp. And as requested by the university. Or are they going to stay and fight the this is a fluid situation, of course, and that is no guarantee that this is going to take place. But this is what my information is. The latest information coming from one of those people who are participating in encampment. We did hear from the students, as I was saying earlier on. And here is some of what one of them told at a press conference earlier today. Lets us. >> This document. Is a farce. This document is nothing but a summary of their already existing procedure on divestment and disclosure with a few minor tweaks to bait us into thinking that we're getting a good deal out of this. It took 3 weeks for this. Is this the administration's idea of a good faith negotiation. >> So the university released a statement yesterday released just before 4:00pm saying that the demonstrators would trespassing if in fact, they did not vacate within 24 hours. As you said, we know that 24 hours is quickly approaching 4:00pm this afternoon. So with regards to trespassing, this is what university said would be taking place if in fact, they ignored the university's request to leave. What we can expect to happen is a warning by both the special constables here at the university of toronto, because they're acting as agents on behalf of the university or the tunnel. Police suspect the special constables will advise people if, in fact, they decide to stay that they are trespassing, that will be followed up by enforcement, which would be a ticket up to $1000 that may not be late tonight. That could happen tomorrow or the next day. And then people will be advised if they continue to stay. I'm not suggesting they are, but looking down the road, if in fact, these people continue to stay at this location, knowing full well that they are trespassing. That could be a consequence of an arrest and that will be the last agent that would be when I would expect the toronto police to step in. But at that point time the police want to make sure that everybody was given ample opportunity to leave and advice properly to leave, knowing the consequences, which could be arrest. Physically removed from the location, given a summons to return back to court provincial court in a criminal court looking at fines up to $10,000 is pretty serious, but is a last resort that the police want to do when it comes to physically removing people. I'm sure they're hoping that that it could heads will prevail and that people can come to some sort of. Decision where it's all the escalated and that these people that are demonstrating leave on their own accord and it doesn't have to get to that stage where by they are being physically removed. But hopefully at 4:00, we'll from the students, what their intentions are they going to stay? Are they believe that's been requested by the university back okay. And that update coming from seeing protesters in about 20 minutes. So we'll watch for that. Steve. Thank you. >> The ndp held a news conference today calling for action to help families facing uncertainty following ontario's latest funding delay. The news conference comes after the provincial government told childcare centres that it will implement a new way of funding the national 10 dollar-a-day program starting in march. 20 starting in rather 2025 many daycares are warning about a risk of closure if a funding formula isn't soon updated to cover the actual cost of providing care. And emily elder, a full-time parent says the closures could be detrimental to people's careers. >> Is there a plan to support the 150 kids that will be released into the wild, not 3.30, if this centre closes no. There is not a plan. There aren't other closures. It will mean working parents. Scrabbling. Adversely impacting their employers operations almost certainly to pick up their kids and make last-minute emergency arrangements and then longer term. Negatively impact. Working parents ability to fully contribute to their workplaces. >> 92% of licensed childcare providers have opted into ontario's 10 dollar-a-day program. We'll go.
