We are Modern Solution Realty [Music] >> Jojo speeding up at expansion of alcohol sales in the province have reaction coming up. Pro-palestinian protesters at the university of toronto are responding to the schools offer to end their encampment. We're going to tell you what they say coming up. It's the first day of advance voting in mississauga's mayoral by-election. Voters can cast their ballots at mississauga city hall today and tomorrow. It's 1:00 24 degrees from 299 queen street west. This is toronto's breaking news cp24. Good afternoon. I'm bakari savage. Ontarians will soon be able to buy beer, wine cider and ready to drink alcohol corner stores. The province announcing today that they moved up their plan to expand alcohol sales with availability of convenience stores coming to temper 5th grocery stores already with licenses will be able to large cases of beer as of august 1st. And by the end of october, more big box stores will be allowed to sell the lower alcohol beverages by beer and wine. This. Sped-up plan is going to cost taxpayers to the tune of 225 million dollars to about the beer store with the transition as well giving a discount to convenience stores. And premier ford was asked where they're speeding up. The process is worth a big

payout. >> It's not going directly to the beer store's where it's going is to make sure that we protect the beer store employees to make sure they know they're going to be taken care of. We're going to audit every single penny to make sure it's going in the right place. So it's not going into the breweries pockets or anything like that is going to the front line people and who we support to make sure the transition as we go through over the next few years. The beer store plays a critical role in recycling and distribution. And we're going make sure we protect employees. >> Not everyone supports expansion. Doctor leslie buckley said of addictions at camh. She joined us live in said that there are many safeguards the need to be in place. >> Careful about serving and selling, making sure that people are certified for selling alcohol product, making sure that the alcohol is kept, you know, away from other areas, putting labels on alcohol to talk about you know, the harms from alcohol and then of course, you know, health promotion strategies. So we're really worried about violence and domestic violence, which is already seeing increases. And we know how to link that is to alcohol. We're worried about duis. So we need, you know, health, we need health promotion, we need to, you know, talk up the harms of health so that people understand that better. >> Earlier this month, a coalition of health organizations, including the canadian cancer society, the canadian mental health association in camh released a letter calling for a comprehensive strategy to deal with increased alcohol consumption, which will come with the change. It says harms linked to drinking cost the province more than 7 billion dollars year more than tobacco and opioids combined. Well, ctv political commentator scott reid, things that premier ford believes expanding alcohol sales will be popular with voters. Doug ford loves nothing more than peddling the beer story and you know, it's, it's the beer store of your story and it's worked well for him. >> You know, buck-a-beer in the original 2014 election campaign beer quarters, he's going to get it. But you see the price, you got to pay 225 million dollars to the largest breweries, multinational breweries in the world. And so we're going to pay more to what may be paying more for that case of beer in a corner store, but it's popular. People would like that that community shake their head and say what we have already they got quebec, it seems ridiculous. Let's get it. So we're going to get it. >> And with more details and reaction in today's announcement, let's go live to cp24's melissa. Doug and melissa, you've been speaking to a lot of people who have opinions on both sides. >> Sure do have opinions on this fun. Bakari would sometimes tough to get people to weigh in on camera. Nothing case today, the ford government billing this as the biggest change to the way alcohol is sold in our province since prohibition, as we've been talking about, is going to be rolled out in full effect by october 31st. Halloween, so trick or treat fort saying, hey, he thinks that this is a popular move among voters to people here. Agree. Let me you can have a listen. I mean, there's a reason why we have restrictions on like, you know what, where you can go and lcbo dates and holidays and liked. >> You know, making sure people can buy like a whole bunch of things, but I mean, every other country has a communion stores. So I think we follow them. It might be fine. I think that's a good idea. What? >> Because we couldn't get any look or the other the grocery stores already have it make sense. There's you know, they're selling cigarettes communion I think, you know, in other places, the more access doesn't necessarily mean the worse it's going to get. >> And it won't come as a shock to you to hear that here in the heart of the biggest city in our country. There are a lot of tourists, they're waiting into other jurisdictions around the world have managed to figure this out. Why can't you in ontario? I guess we'll find out over the months ahead. >> But you know what? I think people bakari weighing in on both sides saying they see the benefit. It is convenient. >> But some concerned about the wire of availability of alcohol in our province. Back to you. Alright, cp24's most a thanks melissa. >> And with that, it's 1:06. 24 degrees. Let's get a check of the roads this afternoon with traffic specialist azalea hart. Good afternoon. Good afternoon, bakari. So the traffic is not terrible right now. There's no major issues to report, but there is a lot of volume taking a look at the cameras. This is on the westbound gardiner right by rogers centre. It's basically a parking lot. This is the type of weather that you can just roll down your windows because you're going to be here for a little while. It's going to take about 20 minutes at last check between lower jarvis and strachan. And then

over on the gardiner, her westbound also closer to bathurst. You can see it starts to move a little bit more but just expect your typical delays are new. Typical delays in this area. And the northbound dvp also moving well until jabar. But we're seeing a little bit of a slowdown, which will persist all the way to york. Now, you can expect the stretch to take about 15 minutes. It is getting heavy, though, on the main roads out of camera view dec spadina and dundas is still closed due to a police investigation. That back to you. I think and heads up for ttc riders are going to be subway closures that you need to be aware of this weekend. That's going to be no service on line 2 between woodbine and kennedy station saturday and sunday. >> Because crews will be doing trackwork shuttle buses will be running. Regular service is scheduled to resume on monday. The university of toronto has given pro-palestinian protests. 24 hours to consider its latest offer. It's asking that that they leave the encampment. Missy ryan as at the uft joins us live scene. >> You have a car. This encampment has been set up at king's college circle since may. The second pro-palestinian students that attend university of toronto. Some outsiders who've been here since may second. And they have made to them and they've been pretty consistent in both of them that they have made towards the university of toronto. And they are that the u of t the school's the relationship with israel and that the university of toronto, they best in any investments that they have with israeli company. So the latest meeting between the university of toronto faculty and the demonstrators happened yesterday at yesterday's the university said to the students they can have a future seat. At the table when it comes to future investments in companies. They said that they are not. Tying off all their ties with the universities in israel. And they said, but they can, only they being the students can only have a seat at the table for future investments if they leave this encampment. There was a letter sent out yesterday at 4:00pm. And that letter said that the if the people did not vacate this location within 24 hours, they will deemed to have been trespassing and they're now found to be trespassers and they can be a charged before that, a provincial offence that we heard from students who spoke at a press conference earlier on today. Here's their clips and the other side of these clips all explain to what I see as the process taking place when it comes to law enforcement and enforcing the trespass to property act. Here's more from the students. We heard from other >> President gertler has not met with us once, although we've asked for his presence multiple times throughout this encampment. By addressing the press in the middle of our meeting. And by giving a live radio interview this morning. It is clear the administration has no intention to negotiate or engage in dialogue with us in good faith. They have already made up their minds and they're ready to tell the world. This is not an offer. This is an ultimatum. >> So come 4:00. If people haven't left this location, bakari, they will have been deemed to be trespassing at that point time. I expect that the university of toronto special constables who have the authority to act with regards to legislation because they're acting on behalf of the university will advise the people at the spot that they are trespassing. That may give them a day or 2, 2, vacate this location. The next process will be a charge, a ticket that could see a fine of $1000 that could be issued by the special constables or by the police. I suspect most likely by the special constables. And then the last phase of this process would be where the people would be advised that they aren't out by certain day, they could face the possibility of being arrested under the trespass to property act and released with a to go to court venture court. That is not a criminal court, but that could be fined up to $10,000. So it's a slow process, but it's done this way. We have a large group of people in a specific location because you do not want to use force if you don't have to, you want to de-escalate the situation and get people all the time in the world to comply with the request. But some point time, if they do not leave the university request that those people be removed within the police to come in and they will apprehend them under the trespass to property act and release. And at another location after being released on part 3 summons, which will require them to attend the provincial offences court and face a fine up to $10,000. Okay season twenty-four's crime analyst steve ryan. Thank steve. >> Amends the george's murder in the stabbing death of woman at a mississauga motel earlier this week. 25 year-old lead osmond. He's facing a second-degree murder charge after a 50 year-old woman was found dead near brittania and little road monday morning. Police say that the suspect and victim are related, but it's not a case of intimate partner violence. And a toddler has died after being hit by recycling truck. And they're the collision happened in the south end of the city yesterday afternoon. Police say that the 23 month-old boy was rushed to a local hospital, then airlifted to a toronto trauma centre, but

later died. The circumstances of the incident are still under investigation. And it's not clear if any charges are going to be late. The federal government is providing more insight into why they rejected toronto's request to decriminalize possession of illegal drugs. Addictions minister sacks as that the proposal did not include age restrictions will limit the amount of drugs a person could she says that the plan left her with deep concerns. The minister says that she decided to denied after tomorrow refused to amend the proposal to address concerns from her department. The application sought to decriminalize possession of all controlled drugs and substances for personal use. And premier ford was asked about the federal government denied toronto's request to decriminalize drugs for personal use. >> Absolute nightmare be disaster, folks. Imagine decriminalizing drugs like heroin, fenton, all cocaine. We saw what happened in bc. We saw what is happening in the U.S. they're all reversing a. And that was a big mistake. They bc. I'm I'm, I'm so proud of premier eby. Saying that they're going to do it anymore. The federal government want they're given the jurisdiction of that into the hands of the province. >> Well, the federal government says that it is open to adding more medications to the list of drugs covered by proposed pharmacare program. The build charts a path towards a universal pharmacare plan, which covers select birth control, diabetes drugs. Health minister mark holland says that the current list represent an absolute minimum and that the government could spend a basin negotiations with provinces and committee recommendations. Insurance industry representatives have expressed concerns about the bill saying that it could disrupt existing private coverage. It has burned through bird flu spreads among dairy cow south of the border. The virus has not been detected in milk in canada yet the canadian food inspection agency says that more than 300 samples of retail milk and then tested as may, 6, all were negative for avian influenza. Officials started keir after some americans samples tested positive. The disease was detected in U.S. livestock earlier this year. And he's been confirmed in at least 51 dairy herds in 9 states. Now officials say that the milk supply remains safe because pasteurization kills the virus. It's the first day of advance voting in mississauga's mayoral by-election.
