(dynamic instrumental music) should welcome back here's a look at some of the other stories we are following this morning. The truck driver who caused the deadly humboldt broncos crash faces a deportation hearing today. Eight years in prison for the 2018 collision that left 16 dead and 13 others injured. City council has looked at the motion to help staff room pop -- study the feasibility 24/7 construction couldn't work on sundays will also consider how to minimize impacts on local community. And a heads up for ttc riders there will be a subway closure to keep in mind for this weekend no service a long line to between woodbine encampment -- kennedy stations on saturday and sunday crews will be doing some trout work in the area. Track worked. The weekend is right around the corner. We're here, it's friday, were giving reliable girl along the water shaping up to be another gorgeous day at there. >> Bill: yes it really is. Interestingly enough so you can feel the dry cool source region for these wins in the shade where I am. It was fresh enough for me to throw on the jacket but where you are on the big patio you are waving at me and I love that we are waving back to use probably got enough sun trying to not be deducted at all and I don't even think you necessarily need a jacket but it's more comfortable here and I'm catching all your kisses so thanks. It's beautiful weather fresh breeze on the northwest this morning the sorts -- sitting the low single digits this morning. We did not fall out that far we are in the midteens down at 14 and recovering nicely a lot of centra normal heights 20? Will get to about 2526 and even though we've got that northwesterly wind the sun already doing's magic during the science tickets up to a high of 2526 and it's going to be a beautiful day without the risk of active weather. More with the risk and it comes in and lasts till late afternoon may be an isolated shower sunday clears back out and here comes the next system it brings under thunderstorms overnight into monday morning and showers tuesday look at the temperature. Click. Xxi on monday 18 on tuesday 60 no one stay for temperatures to rise and think settles only next week and that sets up a decent enough weekend at least at this point. Doctor 70 forecast going to send it back inside to lisette. >> Thank you. The morning drive although busy thankfully incident frequent been talking a lot about the 401 starting with the sub 44 dvp it's typical delays in sections towards don mills was to the northbound lanes busy. Tunnels and sections of the 401 here's a garner commute -- north bay yonge street for maintenance -- south kingsway out passive james and stretch. Your typical delays in the 401 but no new problems. Sending it over to you jee-yun lee and sonia drawings on trying. >> We are enjoying the sunshine just on our legs. Showed just on her legs are kind of in the shade right now. I did put the spf but we're going to keep her legs in the shade. >> I'm asian I don't go in the sun at all. >> I don't either. I stand with the blanket over me. >> Me to. You and I would be great to get on. Said let's get to some entertainment because what a fun cast and appeasing the name of this actual film because we are talking about jason schwartzman, eva longoria, dana brooks all joining michelle pfeiffer in a new holiday comedy, oh what fun. Said she and I love it. >> Sonia: this comedy is being directed by michael scholz are coming out that breaking success of the idea of view within halfway. Shifty and I just finished watching it. I loved it. >> I think he has the right recipe for successful film. This one in particular is a bit of a love letter to all moms where michelle pfeiffer is the lead in it and her character wants to create the most amazing

physics. And for the family where she actually gets forgotten in the shuffling of the planning but it's too late for her family to buy that home he realizes it's too late is gone missing ashley kind of get the whole idea whole fun idea that's happening here so the release date is not actually out yet but I'm guessing probably around the holiday season because it's a holiday film. >> Jee-yun: I think it's going to end up being a holiday classic. >> I love this type of holiday classics because they always bring more than one or two stars like a star packed movie and everybody has their little characters and it is it's one big happy family. Not all films are perfect for this one possibly will have that so really looking for to that also cannot wait for this next film which is attached to it is glenn powell and anthony mackie and laura dern. So this film is going to be led by john lee hancock it's called one shinto I don't know if you remember was also about. The film itself is the fact-based legal drama and it's pretty much look at david and goliath story of the rookie lawyer played by glenn takes on the court case against the west right chemical company monsanto which is facing lawsuits that claim the weed and grass beside killers on safe so this legal drama is expected to unfold probably early 2025 but if you also recall hancock the director behind this is also behind centre bullocks best actress oscar winning from the one side so about bringing together the right people at the right sort of recipe for an award-winning film, perhaps this one is one will be looking out for. >> While two films filled with stars is huge. >> This one actually got the go can as well which is a nice film festival to be at the deal was around 35 million so not bad. >> Not bad. Thank you sonia. We will keep warm your legs. In the meantime we will take a break. >> You are barely getting any fun. >> Richard crouse is on next with a What have you been up to? It seems like from your social posts you've been on a ton of adventures. You wouldn't believe it. We stood at the base of the most incredible waterfall, then we had dinner overlooking it. We explored a century old power station with a giant underground tunnel. We wandered through a tropical garden oasis with thousands of butterflies, and we soared above raging whitewater rapids in an antique cable car. How many countries did you visit? Countries? We did that all at Niagara Parks. ( ) -I'm always thankful when spring comes. It feels like a positive time. -Yes, we all get to spring clean and put new plans in place for the year. -How about you? Is there something you'd like to get done? Perhaps it's your home renovation or a purchase for your business. It's great to know a Flexi Line can help you do that. -Could you use eighty thousand, two eighty or even two point eight million? -Call us today at 1800-new-capital to see what's available to you. If you asked me about my choice of Windows, my recommendation would be draft lock. It's a technology with a thicker, insulated frame, especially for larger windows that thicker, heavier duty frame prevents warping, cracking, sagging. You can get them in double pane or triple pane. They seal very well and lock out any airflow. Hence the name draft lock so that retains more heat. Their energy star rated and they're manufactured in so many different colors and styles. There's an option for everyone. So draft lock is definitely my top choice. ( ) In a field far away from the city there's a tree that's older than my grandmother's mother And it's all okay Some things stay the same ( ) And it's all okay Nothing stays the same ( ) >> Richard crouse joining a slide with some films of this weekend host of the last call podcast good morning. >> Good morning bill how are you? >> On fantastic it's friday and I always turn to you to set up my weekend for some great viewing and we will start with furiosa a mad max auger it's eye-popping film at its best. >> It sure is. This is the origin story of the character furiosa played by charlize therrien and what probably is the greatest action movie ever made fury road about 10 years ago this one is a different kind of movie it still directed by george miller so

itself in an the action is unbelievable but fury road took place over the course of two or three days this one takes place over the course of 18 years no space a little differently but when you get into the action sequences like what they call the stowaway seen in the middle of the film eyes pop right out of your head. George miller is the action maestro he makes movies unlike anyone else and furiosa sits very comfortably on the show right next to all the other mad max movies and theatre's right now go see it as large and loud as you can. >> I like the depth and complexity -- next step is the garfield movie I had a poster on my wall said eat and sleep there must be more to life than that but I hope not contributor garfield's how does this movie compare? >> Here's the thing. You had that poster, people know the comic strip field the cat who loves lasagna eat sleep eat sleep lazy -- this movie is called the garfield movie but it doesn't feel like a garfield movie because in this film which granted as an origin story book garfield is vibrant, he is running around, he's not the lazy sardonic cat that we all kind of grew up reading in the comic strips. So it's more the generic movie for kids. I think kids will still like it, 1011 euros will probably get a kick out of the characters in the wild action scenes and things but if you go expecting to see a movie based on a character that you've grown up reading the comics tricks -- comic strips you might be disappointed. It's in theatres this week. >> I will take note of that. Next up we have dark matter I've been hearing some buzz I'm really excited but I know nothing about it. >> So this is kind of a complicated one -- joel stars in the show which is now playing on apple tv plus based on a very big best-selling novel and he plays a guy who when he's walking home one day gets taken to an alternate version of his life and then over the next number of episodes there's nine episodes in total he tries to work his way back to his regular life and he learns lots of things along the way. This is tense, beautifully shot, very cinematic looking. Eustis built for these kinds of stories. He's kind of an everyman who gets thrown into these wild stories whether it's an avatar or whatever else we've seen him and he always tends to play characters you can relate to even though they are in situations that are completely unrelated. It's called dark matter on apple tv plus right now. >> I love mindbending films. Lastly we have lola the story of -- if you like music you'll probably love this one? >> Yes. This is essentially exactly what the title tells you it's going to be a history of the lollapalooza festival it's on paramount plus right now and it has all the main players -- one of the people who founded this festival is there and it sort of boxy through step-by-step from the point where it was supposed to be only alternative rock and only for outsiders and then it blew up and became something else. As the music sort of caught on in the mainstream. Now it's back again in the much more limited form but it's a really interesting documentary with interesting characters particularly if you were a music fan in the late '80s and '90s you will see a lot of very familiar faces here. It's called lola the story of lollapalooza it's on paramount plus in three episodes right now. >> Bill: that's so cool I'm certainly going to watch the film but I think I'm too old to go. Thank you richard crouse for everything we need to know for the weekend. >> Bill: it's time for headlines. (dynamic instrumental music) >> Good morning it's 8:59am, you're watching toronto's breaking news, cp24. I'm courtney heels in for nick and jenny hears we need to know. Pro- palestinian protesters encamped at the university of toronto it expect to respond to an offer to leave we will bring the latest life from campus. It is the first day of advance voting in mississauga's mayoral by election we will tell you what you need to know if you want to get out and vote. Check this out can as large as breakdancing competition -- will pay us a visit this half hour.

see if you can show off those moves. Let's talk about the weather story right now 9:00am, 16° for like 15. Beautiful nice look from the waterfront not a cloud in the sky from what I can see. >> Me busting the moves is busting out the shorts and t-shirt that's what I like to do on the weekend. It's going to be a beautiful day today to kick off the weekends friday -- saturday might have to navigate around some active weather coming in sort of midmorning, 930 lasting until about two. Showers rumbling their way across the gta and then it quiets down who also get some lingering clouds in the mid-late afternoon but we will definitely get some breaks in any active weather will become more and more localized and isolated and we set the stage for bright sunday. The temperatures do holds because we get a little bit more in the way of sometime tomorrow a bit warmer than models predicting sunday not bad either but there are still big drop up with some active weather coming next week so I can enjoy this early taste of summer while it's here. Here's a look at the subtly radar nothing going on a toy zoom out to wisconsin it's working its way towards us and we are at the pocket of common between two systems either when bringing the ring out of ontario and québec and atlantic canada. Lots of sometime today 26 fresh breeze this morning the shade has got a bit of a chill but in the sun it is warm afternoon for sure and the winds will back off as well tomorrow 92 best chance of seeing active weather. Lisa whether we see on the roads? >> A whole lot of volume it's friday and of course a lot of people tend to break away earlier to maybe enjoy a weekend away at the cottage or wherever you are travelling so let's get you through some volume glacis is eastbound 401 which is been busy in sections between basically the 410 all the way out through the 400 both ways in the 401 through midtown between avenue and dvp busy elsewhere for dvp busiest bench down passed on mills in the east garner driving to downtown this is what it looks like it's slow nothing out of the normal. >> Announcer: this cp24 traffic report is brought to you by capitaldirect.ca. >> Pro-palestinian protesters who are part of an encampment at the university of toronto are expected to respond this morning to an offer that's meant to bring their demonstration to an end. Let's bring in cp24's melissa who is life on campus with the latest. We are waiting for an update from some of the protesters. >> As we wait for the update I want to tell you I just heard from toronto police about the situation here. This after the university of toronto used the strongest language we've heard from them so far to bring an end to the encampment and they are saying they haven't ruled out calling and police to clear out the situation. Toronto police just telling me that they have been in contact with the university with their assistance has not been requested. That the situation after the school issued a 24 hour notice yesterday to demonstrators giving them a chance to respond to the school's latest offer to clear out this encampment. Know if they don't hear back in time they say they are going to issue a trespassing notification. The school's president says the protest has made a number of people in the community feel increasing to stress. That includes the feeling amongst some jewish students here. Have a listen. >> This administration claims they want to have this encampment come to a peaceful resolution yet they attend to blind inside us at every turn. They have stated to us on record that they will not call the police over this weekend. Still the trespass notice and the lives they spread about us for hate speech they continue to talk about the groundwork for a violent clearing. >>, okay, that wasn't the clip we were hoping to hear from that instead was a protester but we did hear from some jewish students earlier saying they are feeling some monies being here on the campus while this protest is ongoing. As for protesters we are going to hear from them again today about two hours time 11:00 A.M. is when they have set up their news conference and they are giving us an idea of what to expect they are calling this offer from the school a scheme. A shameful scheme they say to clear think it meant stay tuned more of their message straight ahead. >> The students understood that this was our best offer and I believe that they recognize that we are serious about ending the encampment sooner rather than later and the ball is now in their corner to really decide whether the commitments bear offering in exchange for commitments we are asking for from them are acceptable. We hope that they will say yes.

>> Courtney: the other thing we are hearing from the school is that plans for convocations her monies that are set to begin in early june will so go ahead as planned. Back to you. >>, okay, melissa thank you so much we will continue to check in on this developing story it is the first day of advanced voting in mississauga's by election -- today and tomorrow there will be another round of advanced voting set for june 1st and 2nd -- 22 of the pulling stations will be -- photos and wanted to bring a piece of identification with them. Election day set for june. The union representing thousands of ttc workers has formally set june 7th as a strike date. It follows a ruling by ontario's top court, which is upholding the right of transit workers to strike. The provincial government appealed a ruling that said a law that eliminated the workers' right to strike was unconstitutional. That appeal was dismissed today. Atu local 113 represents about 12,000 operators and other front-life staff at the ttc. Contract talks continue but the union says they remain far apart on the main issues of job security, wages, and benefits. A heads up for ttc riders that there will be a subway closure to keep in mind this weekend. There will be no service on line 2 between woodbine and kennedy stations on saturday and sunday. Crews will be doing track work. Shuttle buses will be running. Regular subway service is scheduled to resume on monday. A child is in hospital in serious condition after being hit by a recycling truck in barrie. The collision happened in the south end of the city yesterday afternoon. Police say the child suffered potentially life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to a trauma centre. The circumstances of the incident remain under investigation and it's not clear if any charges will be laid. Type two diabetes. To so they can say exactly what conditions the medications were written for or if the patients actually took them. The blue jays opened their four-game series in detroit with a dominant performance. (game din) the jays had 13 hits, including three home runs. That helped them on their way to hammering the tigers 9-1. Starter kevin gausman pitched 6 innings, allowing just one run while striking out 10. Tonight's game starts just after 6:30. >> The road to the paris games has begun for canada's women's soccer team and before the final destination we will be taking part in the sendoff series to rally fans in montréal and right here in toronto at home. TWENTYs now is one of the teams fastest rising stars and hailing from markham jade rose. Morning. >> Good morning thank you for having me. 's >> Think you for joining us first of all people in markham must be losing their minds that you are the sensational soccer player. To get a lot of people when you are back home? >> I definitely get a lot from a local school so my grade school, high school growing up and obviously my extended family is all from markham so they are all there supporting me. >> Love it. Let's talk about the summer sendoff series. How are you and how is this team preparing for this we've got a team game on june 1st and right here in toronto june 4th june 4th. >> We get in with the team on sunday and we will have a couple practices leading up to the games have a little bit -- it's been a while since we've been together with the team but I'm super excited to effect the other. Everyone worked so hard in their individual empowerment so to put all those pieces together preparation for the skin to super exciting. >> There's so much attention right now on soccer women's sports here in canada isn't it beautiful to see this? >> I think it's amusing to see the growth of not only soccer but all sports across the board. It's so great to see, you know, young girls and also young boys coming up to her games and to look up into the stands and see everyone there it's great. >> I know that you had a bit of a setback with your injury just before the 2023 fifa world cup. Tell me a bit about that journey and what you learn from that because any pro athlete, any elite athlete when they go through something like that is not easy. So mentally and physically what did you have to go through to

overcome that? >> It was definitely tough. Words can't really describe the roller coaster of emotions in those moments. It was going to be my first major tournaments or to miss out on such a massive opportunity I think at first there was definitely the sadness, the disappointment the tears and I think I quickly realized that this is just a part of sport whether or not we like it. We push our bodies to the max day in and day out and so injury comes with that and something we have to accept. I believe everything happens for a reason and so too does have that in the back of my mind going to treatment and kind of doing the mundane day-to-day things that help me through my recovery was massive for me. >> You and I are the same I believe that everything happens for a reason. The most important thing is to learn from those moments. Show for sure. >> And the plight as you move forward. Jade, you have your soccer career has gone like this all the way, right? >> Yeah. >> Where does all that talent come from? Does it run through the family? >> I think my parents would love for me to say runs to the family. Big shout out to mom and dad. You know they grow up playing sports as well as my dad played football and my mom play soccer and so I would say I get it from both sides I think I got my brains for my mom and the athleticism for my dad and I think it's married itself very well. >> Just like your mom and dad it's come together beautifully in 2023 last year you were actually named canada's young player of the year for the third time in four years. What an honour. >> Yes it's an amazing honour I think every single opportunity I get to put on the badge and represent the country whether or not it's at the women's stage or -- it's always an opportunity to not only showcase myself but to showcase what a beautiful country we have and how great this nation is at sport. >> Looking ahead to paris I know the deadline to put together the roster is in july and a decision most likely will come at the end of june. What are your thoughts? >> It's a super exciting time. I think there's always that aspect that I'm super nervous but I'm also so excited to hopefully be a part of that group and if not to cheer on the group from home. Show before we let you go, I know you have a bit of a record when you -- >> Keep up so that's what they're called. To record? >> When I was young gracie at the five high five hundreds ice to be there for a while. >> As we go to break I'm going to try with your knees. >> Perfect. >> What the goal? To look ahead? >> Deftly look at the ball you can start off with just hitting it and then catching it and as you get better you can slowly know for longer and longer. >>, okay, but maybe not in heels. >> Running shoes or cleats would be better. >> Fantastic. Thank you so much, good luck I'm crossing my fingers. >> Thank you so much. >> Coming up after the break right here on cp24 breakfast we will continue gearing up for the paris games with a gold medal contender and the first ever breaking competition on the olympic stage.
