I'm in the shade here. Fresh feel in the sun. You will be fine without a jacket and as we move to a high there it is bouncing up to 15 from 14 to a high of 26 today. Rolling up the sleeves and changing into shorts but will not be overwhelmingly humid because the wind direction. Single digits. Right now so it is a chilly start and that's the reason for the winds. We have a line of showers coming in at 9:30 tomorrow morning. Should be off to the east by 2:00, 2:30 and cloud breaks up and partial clearing. Isolated flurries and sunday brightens up but back into active weather weather and that sticks around for a couple of days and temperatures will cool off. Embrace the warm the little while it's here despite midday showers and storms. The rest of the seven day on tap. >> The busy morning continues. I knows clear south 410 to the east 40. Problems now off to the side in the collectors just past mavis still slow but thankfully no other lane restrictions here. Not the case a different story in the collectors past leslie. Right lane is up hooking up a stalled tractor-trailer. Stays busy out to avenue road. A tough spot see that stall in the express but single file because of the long-term lane realignment. Southbound 404 down past lawrence busiest into downtown jameson is busiest as well. >> The traffic report is brought to you by capital direct.ca. >> Auto theft is a mainly issue right now. We are reportingthon daily. People are feeling very frustrated. The federal government coming out with details of an action plan this week saying they will get tough we are penalties and provide more tools for the emergency responders. We thought it would be a good idea to talk to people on the front lines. I want to bring in sergeant pat smyth. This is something you are seeing give us a sense how often you are seeing these in your region? >> When I took over the unit five years ago losing approximately 800 cars a year. That has increased to over 4,000 a year now. >> Every day this is coming across your deck.

>> This is your personal vehicle and now at a loss and vehicles improving on being able to get vehicles but a period of time drivers couldn't get the vehicles. >> A relay attack. Basically what it is is, two individuals working together, two feeds working together. One will go up to the door of the house. At that point in time he's got an electronic device on his back. A wire that he will use he or she will use and that will capture the signal from within your house. Your average key fob will emit a small signal. When you get within proximity your car will know the key is within proximity of me. When that one individual captures the individual and relays it back. The car recognizes my key is beside me and allow you to get in and now start the car as well. >> And what struck me so quick. You saw the one suspect at the front door. >> Takes 10 to 20 seconds. Arriving in your yard, to your door it's seconds. >> People watching at home is there something you can do? You have advice. Devices here people could consider to protect their property. >> We do. Talk about the first one. Specifically to protect against the relay theft. All this does is put your key into this device. Close up the device and all it does is dampens the signal so does not allow the signal. Put your key inside this advice. Put it in your vehicle and your vehicle will not start. >> You can purchase this online and police are handing it out. >> Get it from amazon. >> And this is something that I noticed quite a bit these steering wheel locks seems to be making a resurgence. I remember growing up a lot of people using them. Show you how to install them? I'll let you step in. >> Very basic. Very simple. >> I notice this a lot now. >> One further deterritory. Lock within your wheel. >> It locks up your wheel. Giving you this demonstration. Within seconds it's on there and a deterrent. Doesn't work every time. >> Basically as you said nothing is ever foolproof however one more deterrent that's going to make it that much more challenging to the thief. >> Lastly this device blocker. Talking about this with me earlier. Something that seems small. >> The relay theft is one version of a way to steal the car. After the relay theft they'll have to reprogramme a key and has to be done through your on board computer so that is basically a little port underneath your dash board. And this is a little lock you can put on it that will prevent them from being able to plug into that. >> And again a deterrent for something like this. >> Another deterrent. >> Reporter: this is just something people can consider. Obviously in your department very, very busy but hoping that our audience is watching and saying this might protect my stuff. Brake locks coming back? >> They are. A little locking device that can go on your gas pedal or your brake lock and basically that will stop you from depressing the pedal. Just another thing they would have to cut off or turn off. These are deterrent items but other items as a vehicle owner. GPSs not that we're working specifically with apple or anything but it's a common item out there. An apple air tag. Hide them in your car. It helps us recover your car. >> Reporter: the other thing you call the police. My car is stolen. That can help you. >> Absolutely it does. >> Reporter: thank you for taking the time to come down. This is such an important topic and want to share these tips. Pleasure meeting you. Good luck. Back to you in the newsroom. >> Jee-Yun: thank you, courtney. Entertainment news. Sonia joins us now. >> You've been travelling a lot but glad you are back. >> I am back and good to be back home as well. Start with celine dion. trailer for an upcoming documentary about her career and her life. Have a look. >> I miss it so much, the people. I can't walk, I'll crawl. I won't stop. I won't stop. >> It's all coming back. >> How do you not get emotional when you watch that. I've watched it five times and every time holding back tears. Dion did go public with her diagnosis of stiff person syndrome an illness that can cause muscle rigidity and spasms. All tour dates were cancelled and I cannot wait for this. It premiers on amazon prime video june 25. Don't I have many regrets in life. Things happen for a reason but one of my biggest regrets is the factdy not get a chance to see her in vegas. I was supposed to see her and covid started to happen and I didn't get to it and one of my biggest one of my favourite singers. >> She is special. A generational talent. You're never going to hear a voice like that again and when you start so young in the business like that and all of a sudden you're slowly seeing it taken away I can't imagine what she's going through. >> Hard to watch the documentary. I like to leave on a helpier note. Looking for a little dance floor escape nelly furtado has your back. [ ] >> Nelly is returning to dance music and leaning on lewis to do it right. Propalestinian protestors encamped at the university of toronto expected to respond to an you ever to leave. We are live on campus this morning. >> What if we made a movie. >> A movie? That's a lot of work, man. >> You're high. >> Inside out the lgbtq film festival kicking off looking at the movies with the show organizers. >> It is beautiful outside. A nice look at the skyline. And the warm temperatures coming in a little early with well above normal temperatures right through the week. And today is no exception. A high of 26. A little fresh in the shade right now because of the northerly wind drawing but started off warm in the mid teens and the sun focusing its rays to get that climbing and a high of 26 without the overwhelming humidity and active weather coming in tomorrow morning and lasting until early afternoon. That will break up late in the day. Saturday late day and sunday still nice stretching of weather. Wind gusty this morning back off 15 to 25. Take advance of the warmth while it's here. >> Wish I could say we have nothing to talk about. We have issues and new one on the eastbound side of the 401. In the express past the 410 you can see the right lane is out with emergency vehicles. Haven't heard if it's a stall or a collision but delays on approach. The other issue is the west 401 past leslie near bayview. Probably had heading toward avenue road has cleared so two lanes getting by but still slow. Don valley parkwayier through the lawrence stretch. Out of downtown starting to get busy toward jameson. Eastbound delays typical out through the jameson stretch as well. >> Thank you. It is the first day of advanced voting in mississauga's mayoral byelection. Voteres can cast their ballots at city hall today and tomorrow. The government is providing more insyth into why it rejected the request to decriminalis drugs. It didn't include age restrictions or limit the amount of drugs a person could have. It left her with deep concerns. She decided to deny it after deciding to amend the proposal. The application sought to decriminalize possession of all controlled drugs and substances for personal use. Propalestinian protestors were part of an encampment expected to respond to an offer meant to

bring their demonstration to an end. Bring in melissa. We had our chopper over the scene. You mentioned over 100 tents in the area. >> And a spoiler alert from protestors here about the message they'll share coming up later on. They issued a notice about that news conference saying that the latest offer from the school is a shameful scheme to clear the encampment. The school sending a notice out to demonstrators yesterday. They want protestors out of here. We are expected to here later on today. Share with you the message that's coming from the school. Have a lynn. >> The students understood that this was our best offer and believe that they recognize that we are serious about ending the encampment sooner rather than later. And the ball is now in their court to decide on whether the commitments that we are offering in exchange for commitments we are asking for from them are acceptable. We hope that they will say yes. >> So some of the offers the school is making to protestors is inviting them to a governing council meeting next month allowing them to present their demands for divestment from companies in israel. Will they follow up on that? That remains to be seen at the moment. The other thing we are hearing, too, is that they, giving protesters 24 hour notice to respond and saying if an agreement is not reached with protestors that the school will take further action. Now the school's president was asked during a news conference does that mean calling in police to clear the encampment saying they are not ruling anything out at this point. Expecting to hear from demonstrators here at 11:00 A.M. today. We'll certainly share that message with you when we get it. >> We'll be watching for that update. Thank you. >> A head's up now for ttc riders a subway closure to keep in mind for this weekend. No service along line 2 along woodbine and kennedy. Set for saturday and sunday. Crews doing track work and shuttle buses running in the area. Okay, so obviously that is going to impact quite a few people who rely on transit. We'll switch gears now and send things over to jee-yun lee on the couch. >> Jee-Yun: thank you for that, courtney. Coming up starting today we have a film festival that we look forward to every year. Inside out lgbtq film festival kicking off today until june 6. 106 films overnighting from 25 countries will be screened. A look at what's in store, cohead and executive director and cohead and artistic director of the festival. Thank you so much for joining me. I'm so excited this gets under way today. So today's opening day what can we expect? >> We start off with a big conversation and screening series aimed to youth and that's sold out which we are excited about. And then we close off the day with opening night screening of a film called "my own ass." can I say that? Too late. A comedy that was shot in muskoka that we are excited about and that's sold out. Going to be a great day. >> And you were talking about several films here from 25 countries so what's the process like when you are screening these films and making a decision of which ones enter the festival? >> It can be a process but a community process, too. We cast a wide net. Considering close to 900-2,000 films over the course of a year. As soon as it finishes we start watching. A mix of solicited and unsolicited films. And then we start to carry the programme from there and end up with this beauty that we have starting today. >> I can't imagine the process of narrowing it down to 106 films. That's a lot. With the 106 were there some that stood out for you? >> Having one for me called the

young hearts playing on tuesday. Andrew and I watched it in berlin a couple months ago and still in the running. A beautiful coming of age story of two boys discovering they are falling in love with each other and so heartfelt and from a place of joy and love and the why behind the festival. We want to celebrate queer joy and our stories are obviously quite diverse. Something about this film that really stuck with me. >> What about you? >> Doing a great job. A canadian director in london, U.K. the premier for a film that stars kate winslet's son his first role and wants to be a rock star. An 80s rock star's son in the school so about whether he will create a hit song or create his first love. >> I love the fact that this festival exists. It allows you to give a platform to so many film makers. Do you hope one day we don't need to put these in categories we can enjoy the films because they are incredible stories that need to be heard. >> Just a question. Both can exist. As the queer community continues to evolve we need spaces to be with each other and celebrate our stories but also great for us to no longer have to have a niche festival. We always have the debate, the question is can we maintain the festival that we've been doing this for 34 years. I think there needs to be a space for us to celebrate ourselves and like I said this festival this year is about queer joy. Starting off with a comedy and closing off with a musical. Yes. >> Over the 34 years to see it grow the way it has, right. Toronto audience is incredible. Because they really do embrace diversity, different stories what has been your perspective over the last 34 years of the festival? >> I feel like maybe I've been here 34 years but my 11th festival with inside out. Even though see the growth in my time here has been inspiring and you're right toronto is very much a film city and a city that appreciates good entertainment and wills films that challenge us as well. We strived over the years to balance a programme that celebrates the joy. Also reminds us still work to do and places outside of canada and outside north america where we have a privilege to put something together like this without a lot of difficulty or risk in that way. So I think we always try to be mindful of that and embrace that to have the takeaways. >> Thank you so much for joining us. Thank you for counteracting part of my interview. >> Talk about another film. Before we do I want to mention please, please attend the festival if you can. Starts today wednesday to june 1 for more information inside out.ca. Asking me what's coming up, this is coming up. The garfield movie is out today.
