delivering a trespass notice, the organizers of a pro-palestinian encampment today giving them a deadline on when they need to vacate or face legal action. We have all the details live from king's college circle coming up. Crown prosecutors and deadly shooting at a mississauga restaurant back in 2021 was the result of a plot from a group who pledged allegiance to isis. Details in moments. And ontario accelerating its expansion of alcohol. Sales in the province will have all the details. Plus, reaction should add. 7:30 23 degrees from 299 queen street west. You're watching toronto's breaking news cp24. Good evening. I'm phil perkins. Thanks for joining us. We begin with a significant update to the pro-palestinian encampment situation at the university of toronto with the school delivering a trespass notice, the organizers today cp24's and that can joins us live for the latest wind. >> Yeah, that's right, bill. So the encampment clearly still here tonight on friday evening. But now at this point, as you mentioned, that trespassing notice has been issued. And so the members of this encampment have until 8:00am monday morning to clear the premise is now obviously, this encampment has been here for weeks at this but the latest is an offer from the given to the students yesterday. And part of that offer included an invitation for students to attend the university's business port of governing council meeting, which is on june 19th to present their demands as well as a working group to consider options for disclosure and greater transparency of investments. Part of the demands that the students have been asking the university to me, really, the main one is to divest from direct and indirect investments that support israel completely and the university has said that it will not be cutting ties with israeli universities. So at this point with that offers seems as though the students in this encampment say that it does not meet their demands. They feel that it is ultimatum to try to get them to move. Here's more from what we heard earlier. >> The offer that they put forward really is the first offer. It's a first and you know, we look forward to further negotiations and you know, it's a bit disheartening that despite agreeing to the and continue negotiations, this administration is still going forward with this trespass notice. But we're here will continue to be here and will continue to mandate aspect. >> So it does indeed, sound is the many of the students here are not planning to no signs, at least tonight of any students actually packing up and trying to leave. Obviously, a couple days left until they actually have to do that. The university has said that this is a safety concern, this encampment because some other students say that they feel unsafe because of that. But we're really just going to have to wait and see what happens once again. Not as 8:00am on monday morning, that these students have to be cleared out of this encampment. So wait and back to you. Of us can thank you very much. >> But crown prosecutors say a deadly shooting at a mississauga restaurant 3 years ago was the result of a plot for a group that pledged allegiance to the terrorist group isis, the crown also says that the reason mississauga man was killed was because he was ready to expose those terrorist ties. Here's ctv's jon woodward. >> It was a scene in may of 2021 in the family run restaurant chicken land 5 people shot a 25 year old name. A keel died in an attack that shocked the city of mississauga. I just don't understand. >> Senseless really is, it's just senseless. At the time, police released this surveillance video of the gunman before and after the shooting, part of an investigation that led to the arrests of 3 akasha suleyman rasa and anand and lead the crown attorney to tell a jury in the first-degree murder trial of the brampton courthouse that keel had gone to work in abbas's warehouse ground. Attorney david diorio said you will hear evidence that 90 mckiel had become aware that the group had pledged allegiance to isis. They were just buying and selling products. They had pledged allegiance to isis. The islamic state and money was being used to finance that organization sent back home to further that cause he was planning to go to the authorities and betray the others. It's our position that the others came up with a plan to prevent that from happening. A plan to kill name a keel and his family. >> The crown says on may 29th 2021. That plan was put into action alleging that nath entered the restaurant, pulled a handgun and shot 7 times in 18 seconds. Witnesses told the court they saw a slender man rush from the restaurant and hop into the trunk of a waiting honda accord, which sped off inside a keels mother. Rania had heard several pops. She was shot in the arm. She rushed in to see several other family members being shot, including one of her sons. She said I looked at him, he was looking at me. I could see the blood everywhere on the ground. I could do nothing. She said she called 9-1-1 and then ask any driver in the gas station for help. Police pulled footage from some 70 dash cams and surveillance cameras on route to follow the accord back to abbas's business. One officer testified a major break in the case. John woodward, ctv news.

>> In york region police are investigating a series of shootings at a cinema in richmond hill. They've releases video showing shots being fired at york cinemas near east beaver creek road and highway 7. The shots were fired from 3 different vehicles on 3 different occasions. The first time was may 17 shots are fired again 2 days later, may 19th and then again earlier today around 2:30am the shots were fired towards the main engines of the theatre. Each time no one has been injured. Now 3 suspect vehicles are described as a white four-door pickup truck with a black cargo bed, black cargo bed cover. A red suv was silver rams and a dark-coloured suv with black roots europe region police are appealing for information. Tips can also be left anonymously via crime stoppers. The mother and child were sent to hospital after being hit by vehicle in etobicoke this evening. Now this happened before 5.30 near royal york road and medical avenue. Paramedics tell us the mother and child were taken to hospital, but their injuries are considered minor. Police are investigating and say the driver remained on scene. And out of the city. A toddler has died after being hit by a recycling truck in barrie. The collision happened in the south end of the city yesterday afternoon. Police say the 23 month-old boy was rushed to a local hospital airlifted to a toronto trauma centre. But later died. The circumstances of the incident remains under investigation. It's not clear if any charges will be laid. He's had a lot of people talking ontarians will soon be able to buy beer, wine cider and ready to drink alcohol at their nearest corner store. We're live outside their beer store. Things are about to change their. The province announced today that they've moved out their plan to expand alcohol sales with availability at convenience stores coming on september 5th grocery stores already would licenses will be able to sell a larger cases of beer as of august. 1st. And by the end of october, more big box stores will be allowed to sell beer and wine. This accelerated plan is going to be causing taxpayers, though, around 225 million dollars, that's going to help out the beer store with this transition as well as giving a discount to convenience stores. Premier ford was asked whether speeding up the process is worth that big of a payout. >> It's not going directly to the beer store's where it's going is to make sure that we protect the beer store employees to make sure they know they're going to be taken care of. We're going to audit every single penny to make sure it's going in the right place. So it's not going into the breweries pockets or anything like that is going to the front line people and who we support to make sure the transition as we go through over the next few years. The beer store plays a critical role in recycling and distribution. And we're going make sure we protect employees. >> Some people we spoke with support the expansion. Will be convenient, isn't. >> Any like downside to do >> No, I think its responsibility of the people to be able cells and let you buy the well, I don't live in the city, but if I had a party, I won't stop honest thing as long as you're responsible and you know your limits, I think you should be fine. And from the states. So. >> I think not uncommon there at all. I think and might facilitate peoples. He said. Trafficking, they have more options to get like that, get things and places like that. I think that we all right. >> But not everyone is for the expansion. Doctor leslie buckley as the head of addictions that camh she joined us earlier and says there are many safeguards that needs to be in place to reduce harm. >> It really all comes down to accessibility. So there's multiple studies that show that the single most important lever that impacts the amount of alcohol consumed by a society is accessibility. And what we mean by that, we mean price. So the minimum price plus taxes. So the higher the price, the less consumed the hours of availability and the retail density. So you know, all those things are increasing at this point. And we know that that will have an impact in terms of consumption of alcohol. >> Earlier this month, a coalition of health organizations, including the canadian cancer society, the canadian mental health association and camh release a letter calling for a comprehensive strategy to deal with increased alcohol consumption. That will come with the change thanks as harms linked to drinking cost the province more than 7 billion dollars a year. As for the tobacco and opioids combined. Meanwhile, the federal government is providing more information into why it rejected toronto's request to decriminalize possession of illegal drugs. Addictions minister ya'ara saks says that the proposal didn't include age restrictions or limit the amount of drugs a person could have. And she says that the plan left her with, quote, deep concerns. The minister says that she decided to tonight after toronto refused to change the proposal to address concerns from our department. The application sought to decriminalize possession of all controlled drugs and substances for

personal use. Premier ford was asked about the federal government's decision. >> As long as I'm premier, we're never going to decriminalize hardcore drugs. What I believe in, we need more detox centres. We need more rehab rehabilitation centres, but we sure the heck don't need people shooting up and doing drugs in neighbourhoods like mississauga were anywhere and that sun in ontario. >> Well, the same time, the federal government says it is open to adding more medications that illicit drugs covered by his proposed pharmacare program. The build chart a path towards a universal pharmacare plan that covers select a birth control and diabetes drugs. Health minister mark holland says that the current list represents an absolute minimum that the government could expanded based on negotiations, but provinces and committee recommendations, insurance industry representatives. However, they've expressed some concerns about the bill say that it could disrupt existing private coverage. Speaking of coverage, ndp party held a news conference today calling for action to help families facing uncertainty. Fine. The province's latest funding delay. The news conference comes after the provincial government told childcare centres that it will implement a new way of funding the national 10 dollar-a-day program starting in 2025. Many daycares are warning about a risk of closure if a funding formula is an updated soon to cover the actual cost of providing care. Ndp mpp. But taylor carp osha spoke about the impact that these funding delays have on daycares across ontario. >> Site is a not-for-profit centre. And the whole aim is to not make a profit to be able to provide this service for families in the community. Just up the street. We had only daycare, a for-profit centre withdraw from the 10 dollar-a-day childcare program because of the implementation problems, the lack of funding and the uncertainty around the funding formula. The ymca, one of the largest child care providers in the province is also experiencing the same challenges they're losing $32,000 per child for infant care. >> 92% of licensed childcare providers have opted into ontario's 10 dollar-a-day daycare program. Well, it is the first day of advance voting in mississauga's mayoral by-election. Voters can cast their ballots at mississauga city hall today and tomorrow.
