but that is starting to change. Mark McALLISTER looks at the transition to sankofa square and who will be paying for it. >> Mark: it's a subtle move that many of the tourists here may not be all that aware of, given all the signs that exist but the yonge yonge dundas square name is no longer on top of the pillars behind me, a controversial move for those people that live here to give this space a brand-new identity. >> Over the last few years, as these council decisions have wound their way through the system, I continue to hear from people that are very upset with this change. >> Mark: the faded outline of what had been the identifier for toronto's central square is all that remains after the lettering was removed earlier this month. Only a couple of small yonge/dundas indicators remain as the transformation to sankofa square takes place. >> I'm sure we have better things to spend our money on and worry about in the city than -- it's trivial. >> I still call skydome skydome. Maple leaf gardens maple leaf gardens. This will always be dundas square. Come on. >> Mark: the sankofa square name came about after a committee involving black and indigenous leaders studied options to replace dundas. An initial council decision to change the name of the entire street was scaled back due to cost. >> It shouldn't be lost that the renaming of the square could detract from that success in the future and end up costing the city and taxpayers a lot of money to run the square in the future. >> Mark: the price tag for the design, fabrication and installation of new signage is expected to cost between 105 and $200,000, money the mayor says doesn't come from the taxpayer. >> So, yes, it costs I think something like 200 -- $104,000 bucks to change the name of the square with the sign, but all of it is paid for by owners of the buildings around it. >> Mark: the process began after a petition pointed out that henry dundas was involved in delaying the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade. Sankofa, meanwhile, originates in ghana and represents the act of reflecting on and reclaiming teachings from the past. >> I think it's fine. Change is good, because of the past reputation, I think we need to move forward. >> Mark: expect the rebranding and the marketing campaign, a communication to try and convince people of the name change around the same time the new sankofa square signs go up by the end of the year. Mark McALLISTER, "CityNews." >> Cynthia: I think it's going to take us and the whole city to get used to the name change but we'll get there. Let's talk about the weather, michelle. Did we narrowly miss a big storm? I heard it was active elsewhere. >> Michelle: yes, and it still is. Up towards pembroke, we've even seen some tornado warnings. Here in toronto I think at this point we're ok still. A slight slight chance. >> Cynthia: good because I left my cushions outside. >> Michelle: maybe bring them in. I think you should be ok. There's still a potential we could see some active weather around 9:00 or so this evening but the -- worst of it well north of us. We do have a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for the city of toronto the G.T.A. up towards cottage country. That's where we have severe thunderstorm warnings. That tornado warning I was mentioning has now dropped as you can see. That cell approaching petawawa has died down a little bit but because we still have a severe thunderstorm warning on that cell you need to be inside. As for the city of toronto, we're still ok. Most of the active weather to the north of us. Collingwood for example barrie getting into some active weather but what we are all feeling right now are those really gusty winds. Gusts between 30 and 50 kilometres an hour out of the south. Of course for areas that are seeing thunderstorms, wind gusts locally of about 100 kilometres an hour. Temperature wise, this really feels like summer, doesn't it? 26° out at toronto pearson but it's still feeling like the low 30s when you factor in the humidity. And of course humidity, moisture in the air is one of the ingredients we need when we're talking about thunderstorms. Tomorrow, a totally different story. Our atmosphere really settles down. No humidity. Temperatures, 24° and mainly sunny. I mean it doesn't get much better than that, right? Winds are also going to calm down as we move through the evening and overnight. Tomorrow northwest winds kind of ushering in that fresher air mass and then as we head towards the weekend, it's looking like your temperatures are going to dip down a little bit. We have a great day on friday as well at 26°, holding onto that sunshine. Temperatures are actually going back to where they should be at this time of year come saturday and we have the potential for some active weather. We'll talk about all of those details coming up in your extended forecast. >> Announcer: ahead on "CityNews" -- >> Pat: the parents of an

We're just in scarborough flying just north of bluffer's park. We have a section of kingston road closed for westbound traffic. It's from midland over to sharp so that's a two-block closure. You see here that no westbound traffic's coming through. There was a light pole that's been knocked down here at the intersection of midland -- pardon me of kingston road and sharp so that's west of midland. Only westbound traffic affected here but eastbound traffic as you can see still getting through. They'll have to replace that light standard. Looks like it may have been the overhead lighting as opposed to a traffic pole.
