start educating kids and youth about the fines and the dangers of stunt driving. But they're also letting parents know how they could be implicated if their vehicles are used and it is he in their name. So when it comes to project erase, education and enforcement are key but they're also mentioning that parents are key as a second line of defence to try and keep the roads safe this summer. Cynthia. >> Cynthia: good point. Thank you very much, brandon. We turn to sports now and an announcement that many have been waiting for. Move over, raptors. You're not the only basketball team in town anymore. As lindsay dunn tells us, wnba is coming north to canada. >> Lindsay: there's applause, tears and a lot of emotion as it became official. Canada is getting its first wnba team. >> Toronto, welcome to the "w." [ Applause ] >> Lindsay: wnba commissioner cathy englebert announcing that toronto will be the league's first expansion team outside of the u.s.a., with the new franchise set to tip off in 2026. >> I woke up today saying we're making history today and you don't get to say that too much in your life. >> Lindsay: the room filled with canadian trailblazers from wnba alumni stacey dale and tammy sutton-brown. >> I always hoped for this day. >> To team canada alumni tamara tathumb and kim smith-gauthier. >> I'm so excited of the future of canadian female basketball players. >> Lindsay: the prime minister was on hand for the historic moment, as well as raptors vice-chairman and president masai ujiri, raptor scottie barnes and former raptor kyle lowry. >> Many say women's sports is having a moment. I disagree. Women's sports has arrived. It's a movement. >> Lindsay: the franchise, which will be the leagues' 14th team and will join the league in their 30th season, was able to happen because of billionaire larry tanenbaum's group financially backing it. >> We didn't have anything like this to strive for in the country itself. It didn't exist. And so to stand and be a - part of this was a just incredibly emotionally high, lifting experience for me. >> We'll see the reaction of it right away in terms of the support and the fan base and the excitement and community work that I know the organization will do and the way that the community will surround the team. >> Lindsay: there is still a lot of work to be done before they launch, including finding a team name. >> Every single person has has said what is this team's name and colours going to be? We don't know. It's a clean slate so we are very much looking forward to sourcing information and suggestions from the canadian public. >> Lindsay: former raptors V.P. teresa rush, the new president of the wnba expansion team, says they're hoping to find a name that represents women and the country as a whole. >> This isn't just toronto's team. This is canada's team. We're going to play across canada, different markets. We look forward to doing that in a way that no other professional sports team in canada has ever done. >> Lindsay: the team's home base will be at coca-cola coliseum in toronto. Some games will move to scotiabank arena and they also announced that during their inaugural season, some games will be played in vancouver and montreal. For "citynews" in toronto, I'm lindsay dunn. >> Cynthia: they are known as lost canadians because they don't have citizenship rights. But as erica natividad reports, that's about to change thanks to a new government bill that many believe is long overdue. >> I was, like, thank god. >> Erica: toronto resident joseph tito was applauding a new bill tabled by the trudeau government that would allow foreign-born canadian parents to pass their citizenship rights to children born abroad. >> I think it's a great thing because I mean if you're a canadian citizen, you're a canadian citizen, period. >> Erica: it's a cause close to his heart. "CityNews" first spoke to tito nearly six years ago amid an emotionally draining battle to bring his newborn children home to canada. >> Can we just please capture this moment, and I want to live in it for the rest of my life. >> Erica: the twins were born via a foreign surrogate in kenya but they did not inherit his canadian citizenship because he's considered a second-generation canadian. He was born in italy to a canadian mother. It meant he'd have to sponsor his kids as foreign national family members and the girls would have to stay in kenya during the process. The twins were eventually granted temporary travel documents. >> When we got back, my girls were stateless for the first nine months of their life. If I wasn't on social media or if I didn't cause a mess that I caused, I would have been in kenya for nine months. >> Erica: it's a situation that's not unique to tito. But the federal government is now aiming to change that. >> Under the new legislation, children born abroad to a canadian citizen, who is also born outside canada, will be a canadian citizenship from birth as long as a canadian parent who was born outside of canada has accumulated three years of time spent in canada before the birth of the child will be able to pass down their citizenship to their child. >> Erica: the bill reverses changes to the law made in 2009 by the then

conservative government under stephen harper. >> I've talked to family members who have been separated from their loved ones because of this unjust law the conservatives brought in 15 years ago. >> Erica: last year the ontario superior court found the current system unconstitutional and gave the trudeau government until june 19th to fix it. >> Citizenship is very much a privilege that needs to be earned in a lot of circumstances but certainly not in these cases where it was just patently unfair to begin with. >> Tito's two little girls got their citizen ship after about two and a half years in canada. They're now five and about to graduate kindergarten. He says he hopes the new bill means other parents won't have to go through what he did. >> I don't wish it upon anybody. And I think that if -- doesn't matter where your children are born if you are canadian and you have ties to canada, then you should be able to bring your children home. >> Erica: while the court has given the feds until june 19th to make the changes, immigration minister marc miller says the government may have to request an extension as the bill makes its way through the house of commons. For "CityNews," I'm erica natividad. >> Cynthia: the clock might be ticking on pro-palestine protesters to clear their encampment at u of T's downtown campus after the school delivered its latest offer this afternoon. Our jazan dpre wal is live at u of t. What did school administrators have to say? >> Jazan: cynthia, the university of toronto has given pro-palestinian protesters a 24-hour deadline to accept an offer they presented earlier in the meeting or the president of u of t warns they will be issued a trespass notice. >> That offer includes supporting students through the university's process for considering a divestment request and a commitment to ex about he indict this effort. Striking an advisement commito to examine a case for divestment and creating an expert working group to consider options for disclosure and increased transparency relate to the university's investments. >> Jazan: the president also made it clear that the university will not end partner shps with israeli universities. That is one of the three main demand of the demonstrators as the institution says it's committed to academic freedom. Since may 2nd, dozen of students, staff and faculty have been occupying king's college circle here at university of toronto's downtown campus. They have been extremely defiant in their demands, divest from companies committed to the israel military. I got a chance to speak to one of the encampment organizers behind me. They told me they were completely blindsided by the hour. They weren't expecting a 24-hour deadline to accept this offer, describing it as an unfair ultimatum. But when I asked them if they were, you know, possibly looking into accepting this offer at this time, it remains unclear. Right now they're actually having a meeting right behind me to decide on that. They will be holding a presser at 11 a.m. Tomorrow but once again the u of t president has made ims -- himself pretty clear he wants the encampment done. Sending it back to you, cynthia. >> Cynthia: ok, jazan. Thank you you. And the humanitarian crisis continues to grow in gaza tonight. Brandon choghri with the concerns that helping isn't reaching some of the most vulnerable palestinians. >> It looks like the whole operation is being designed and destined to fail. >> Brandon: the united nations children's fund warning of the dire situation in gaza as israel continues to restrict aid deliveries in the strip. >> Aid is not reaching the desperate people who need it so badly to survive day after day. >> Brandon: israel's increasing pressure in the south has forced palestinians to flee rafah, an area that was once considered safe from the fighting. >> We've had 800,000 people displace under rafah in the last ten days. It's an extraordinary figure. There's nowhere safe to go to. [ Gunfire ] >> Brandon: earlier this month, israel seized control of the rafah crossing, effectively sealing off gaza from the rest of the region. >> We can't get to our warehouses in rafah because of the operation, and fuel is inadequate to move supplies. The aid program is grinding to a halt there. >> Brandon: U.S. officials say they've been briefed on israel's rafah plans and are closely monitoring the operation. >> We now have to see what unfolds from here. We will watch that. We will consider that and we will see whether israel has briefed us and what they have laid out continues or something else happens. [ Gunfire ] >> Brandon: israel releasing new video of fighting in gaza, where officials say the assault will continue until hamas is eliminated. >> Now power on earth will stop israel from protecting its citizens and going after hamas in gaza. We will destroy hamas.

we will return peace and security to the people of israel and to the people of gaza. >> Brandon: on friday, the international court of justice is set to make a decision on a request to order a halt of raceally -- israel's rafah incursion. The U.N.'s top court has no way to actually enforce its decisions, but they do carry international weight.
