A live shot this morning from orangeville. Look at bat sunrise on this thursday may the 23rd. Good morning, I am tammie sutherland. Thank you for tuning in on this short week. In orangeville is where we find frank ferragine. He is live there this morning. Taking in the sunrise I'm giving us the latest on the forecast. You have hit it out of the park when it comes to the warm weather. But a lot of active weather that we saw yesterday? >> Frank: yesterday we had a lot of boom pop powell's in the sky. I had a tornado warning around 9:00 last evening. >> Tammie: I was hearing that there were some people in the newsroom, including our supervising producer, who said he had his phone going off because of a tornado warning. That is scary. Did you have to run, go to the basement? What did you do. >> Frank: my son ran in. The first thing I did was pull up the radar and look at where the cells are and where does what was going on at that time. And I felt confident that it was not moving through the area where I was. So we watched it. We took a bit of time and just watched the lightning on the thunder. But that was a cold front that moved through. So, this morning, my camera mound this morning, I can see his goosebumps. It is a little bit cooler outside this morning. He wore shorts. Not a good idea. >> Tammie: gabe, always check with frank before you get dressed in the morning. See what is going on and then you get dressed. >> Frank: I told him that. He is going to learn. He will learn. As I mentioned, because of that cold front we are out of the humidity. Which means we are still comfortable. Very comfortable outdoors. Temperatures in the mid-upper teens. But we have a bit of a breeze. A beautiful day today. We saw that sky with that intro. That opening shot. That's guide this morning, mainly clear skies, lots of sunshine through today and tomorrow. We are going to be around the mid-twenties. Get outdoors and enjoy this. We will be unsettled through saturday talk with a risk of seen showers. On sunday we should see partly cloudy skies, and next week more springlike conditions. On monday upwards of five millimetres of rainfall. On tuesday the risk of showers, and on wednesday, temperatures in the upper teens under overcast skies. Today, mainly sunny, daytime highs around 25, but cooler this morning as you had your way out the door. But now we are going from orangeville this morning all the way south, over to you, stephanie henry. >> Good morning, frankie. Just over to me. I'm looking at the roads and it sounds very busy where you are. I can hear the traffic moving by you. >> Frank: it is fairly busy. We are on broadway. And we will be talking about a small little restaurant you're coming up. And this connects towards highway nine. So it's a busy stretch this morning with people getting off to work. >> I can see that on our cameras. Good morning. We are looking at the drive this morning. It is busy leaving the city and making your way around the city because of the overnight construction. First off, the northbound ddp. Heading away from town.

construction is taking up the right lane. Cones are set up. Northbound ddp is slow this morning. Up towards york mills where we have this construction taking place. It is a busy drive. We are also watching a problem on the westbound 401. We have construction on the go right now along with this problem approaching alan in the express. The right lane is blocked by a collision. It is low from young in the express and the collectors is moving at a decent pace. Looking at the cameras, I can see this vehicle here that is facing the wrong direction. But it is on the shoulder, it seems. I will keep my eye on that one as well. We are seeing delays through the area. Another vehicle showing up to be seen moving through the construction cones. We will keep our eye on this area as they morning continues. That is a look at the express lanes and how slow they are as of right now. Currently we have construction approaching dixon in the three left lanes. Unable to see those cones, so it may have been picked up and delays are subsiding. Westbound 401 through mavis and the collectors, that is reportedly closed and we have seen delays through their, but that has cleared. Outside of our major routes, we are hearing about a broken water main through queen. That is closed -- closed to east of woodbine because of this water main. After a devastating accident, trust the lawyers at thomson rogers to guide you from the hospital room to the courtroom, real-life tap -- real-life counsel. Your time is 606, that's a look at your drive, sending things to tammie sutherland next with a look at your headlines. >> Tammie: thank you very much, stephanie. Good morning, everyone. We begin in mississauga where a late night shooting has left two men fighting for their life in hospital. Peel police were called to a parking lot. Winston churchill and britannia. Gunfire rang out just after 11:00 o'clock last night. Paramedic say that a young adult male and a middle-aged male were found with life-threatening injuries. One was taken to a local hospital and the other airlifted to a trauma centre. We are live on scene this morning where police are still investigating. They expect to maintain a presence in to the rest of the day. You can see here parts of the parking lot are cordoned off. No word on how this will affect or impact school here. Investigators believe that this was an isolated incident and say that the suspect or suspects have fled the area. No description's have been released. Still on the streets, a man is in hospital with serious injuries after a stabbing in a west end neighbourhood. It happened after 5:00 yesterday afternoon near a grocery store parking lot. This is a jane street and alliance avenue near black creek. Police are still on the hunt for a suspect after a victim in his twenties was found with possible life-threatening injuries. Anyone with information is being asked to call polili. We are just a few short hours away from an official announcement that toronto will get its very own wnba team. A first for the league in canada. Caryn ceolin is taking a closer look at an exciting rumour that looks out to soon become a reality. It looks like it is happening and it will be announced this morning. >> Good morning, tammie. It is shaping up to be a record-setting day for basketball here in toronto, as we learn that toronto billionaire larry tannenbaum has been granted the expansion franchise for the wnba. He confirmed to the associated press this morning with the official announcement, saying that toronto's new team will play here at the coca-cola coliseum at the 8700 seat stadium at exhibition place in 2026, and will have the ability to move up to the scotiabank arena on occasion. Larry tannenbaum is a minority owner of maple leafs sports and entertainment, which owns the raptors. And he says simply that women's sports is good business. Last year the wnba reported its most-watched regular season and highest average attendance in recent years. While the leagues exhibition games here in canada the last two seasons showed up the passion of the fans in this country. I spoke with a woman who founded the league hoop queens to encourage more women and girls to play the sport. She says having a professional women's basketball team here in canada is recognition that there is a market and talent here. Haveve a listen. >> For the wnba to now come, it

shows that we have a market here for it, and there is also -- they are creating that representation for the next generation and the current hooper's to be inspired. I want to say to everybody, get comfortable. Even if you are uncomfortable with that, get comfortable. We are here with or without you. Women's basketball will be even greater in canada. >> Reporter: tammie, this would be the league's first canadian team. They have 12 teams so far but is expanding. That announcement by larry tannenbaum's group is set to get underwayayt 9:00 this morning. >> Tammie: and we will bring you the latest right here on "bt" and on citynews.ca. The city says that it is now taking a people first approach when it comes to in front and, -- confronting encampments and supporting those experiencing homelessness. >> The approach here is not to start with enforcement and not even to prioritize enforcement. >> What is needed is a coordinated regional response to this issue and the establishment of a regional assessment centre. Something that counsel has long asked for, as long as -- as well as our community partners. >> Reporter: officials say that the new model includes scheduled mental health, primary care visits and dedicated case managers for individual housing plans. The report however does not completely rule out enforcement. It also calls for additional funding from the province and the feds. Recommendations will go to the economic and community development committee next week before heading to general counsel at the end of june. Just over two weeks until mississauga residents elect their next mayor. We know that it is poverty that leads to food insecurity, and we will ask people how they plan to enact to their promises that they have been making, to make sure that they are realistic on the ground for people who are struggling the most in our community. >> Tammie: voters will get to hear from multiple people.
