Allergy season is in full swing if you live with seasonal allergies and feel like the pollen season feels longer and longer every year, guess what? U may be right. Joining us this morning with tips on managing symptoms and the changing allergy season is family physician dr. Stephanie liu joining us early from edmonton, city of champions. Oilers stars game three tonight on the cbc and sportsnet. Doctor, good to see you. >> Good morning. >> Sid: let's get right to it here. What causes seasonal allergies and what symptoms should people be looking for? >> Yeah, allergy season can vary in different regions of canada. Generally starts in spring and that's when tree pollen is released. When that pollen, when it gets in the eyes, when we breathe it in, that's when we get the annoying allergy symptoms, that's because our body mis mistakenly identifies the harmless pollen as dangerous, as the bad guys and that causes the release of histamine. That's when you get the annoying symptoms, sneezing, stuffy nose, itchy watery eyes. Itchy throat. That's what causes allergies. >> Sid: so -- I mean, a lot of people, doctor, are saying to themselves and to others, boy, this allergy season feels like it's worse than the previous one, which was worse t tn the previous one. Is it our imagination or is that actually happening? >> No, that is actually happening. Many of us probably notice, why are my allergies lasting longer and why are our symptoms even worse than in previous years? That's because in recent years the weather is getting warmer and warmer, and that causes plants to grow for a longer period of time and as a result more pollen is being with released for a longer period of times, which causes allergy symptoms to last longer. In some areas there's higher amounts of pollen. That's why some people notice that their allergy symptoms are

even worse. That's why it's so important that if you are experienceeing any allergy symptoms and like me, if you enjoy your time outdoors, it's important to check in with your healthcare provider to see what options there are for management. >> Sid: all right, the seasons are getting a little worse. We've established this. You are the expert, I am not. As the expert then please help us doctor. What can we do to make the seasonal a little less annoying? >> Yeah, there's general things I recommend. First off, try to reduce exposure to the allergen which %-pis mostoften ollen. I recommend first limit the exposure. Keeping your doors of your cars and windows of your -- windows of your cars and your home closed. Filtering the air with air conditioning, making sure if you're outside cutting grass or cutting wood, making sure that you're wearing a high-quality mask and once you get inside, wash your hands and face. You're going to be covered in pollen. Better yet, hop in the shower. For a lot of people that helps with the symptoms. But some people will need medications. So the two main stays of treatment are nasal steroids and antihistamines. Nasal steroids are good, they reduce the nasal congestion. But in some cases antihistamines will be beneficial too. Antihistamines like reactine can work to remove the itchy watery eyes and the stuffy knows. If you have a a little one with allergies, reactine comes in a liquid form for kids ages 2 to 12. I did not like swallowing pills when I was young so that's a great option. With all medications it's important to check in with your healthcare provider before starting medications. >> Sid: full disclosure, I am not unfamiliar with the reactine lifestyle.
