should leave their cultural symbols alone. >> I actually thought it might be A.I. generated. >> Xiaoli: but the image is real. The rcmp is now allowing indigenous officers to wear the ribbon skirt as part of the dress uniform, but the move to advance cultural change has sparked outrage. Some people say the move is simply pandering, while others say giving the rcmp -- given the rcmp's history and reputation among indigenous people, well, that makes this the a bad look. >> The rcmp, one of the first jobs that they had was to push the indigenous people onto the reservations and force them to stay there. They had another job later on when they had to go to the community, grab the children and bring them to residential school and put the parents in jail if they didn't give up their children. >> Xiaoli: accord to the native women's association of canada, ribbon skirts symbolize sacred traditions and are an embodiment of resilience to colonial cultural erasure. The rcmp says the move to add ribbon skirts came from indigenous officers themselves. In a statement to "CityNews," the rcmp says the idea came from the women's indigenous network, noting there are 311 regular rcmp members who self-identified as indigenous women, nonbinary or two spirit. The statement adds, "s ribbon skirt, a win led initiative, supports employee pride, advances cultural change in the organization and helps to build and mend relationships with indigenous people and communities." knackuset, a cree woman and sixties scoop survivor says she understands why indigenous people within the rcmp would want to wear the ribbon skirt but feels the rcmp is passing the work of sec -- reconciliation off to indigenous women. >> If it's indigenous led it means that the rcmp, as an institution, isn't doing the work. It's the indigenous people that are putting this forward that are making this initiative, that are, you know, wearing the ribbon skirts and the rcmp is like yeah. It's good. [Chuckles] reconciliation. >> Cultural transformation and reconciliation, it's not a cop in a ribbon skirt. It's the restitution of indigenous land and life and the ending of state-sanctioned violence and systematic violence as we know it. >> Xiaoli: assistant professor and red river MéTIS woman dr. Kristin bos is writing a book. She says the relationship with indigenous peoples remains uncomfortable adding that if police want to wear the ribbon skirt, more progress on reconciliation must ham. >> If it was ever appropriate, it would be when these colonial institutions adopt and fulfil all 94 calls to action as set out in the t.r.c., as well as the calls to justice put forward in the final inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women and girls. >> Xiaoli: in ottawa, xiaoli li, "CityNews". >> Ahead on "CityNews" -- >> Audra: unveiling newly renovated areas of the toronto zoo. Audra brown gets a firsthand look at two new improvements including one honouring the life of former lieutenant-governor david onley, who has a very special place in our hearts here at "CityNews." >> Smooth and very safe for everybody and david would just love it. Perfect. >> Audra: beautiful the way it's not steep the way it was. This was a massive hill. >> Yes. >> Audra: and just cement. And so not friendly. >> So unfriendly. Big black asphalt hill. Who wants to do that? So this is just wonderful, and I know that it's so honouring in david's name and he would be very, very happy about it. >> Audra: the new meandering david c. Onley trail at the zoo is an elevated boardwalk, replacing a paved road that went straight up a steep hill. >> So this is built to a 20-to-1 ratio so you're not actually feeling like you're climbing a mountain when you're doing it. This is just an amazing leap forward. We realize getting around your toronto zoo wasn't as easy as it should be. >> Named in honour of the life and legy of david onley, ontario's 28th ontario lieutenant-governor and former Citytv reporter. As the first lieutenant-governor with a physical disability, he adopted accessibility as his primary mandate. >> Absolutely what david was all b.he lived his life advocating and pushing on of the he was a bit of a warrior for it I think. I think it's very apt it's called david c. Onley trail because he was a trailblazer. >> Audra: also unveiled today are the new renovations to the state-of-the-art green house. >> What's phenomenal about this horticultural team is this is a working site. They are literally growing plants that are going to go out, that are going to be fed to animals, key to their nutritional well-being. We are so grateful to the federal government as well as our partners at city of toronto. Project worth just under $1 million to make it fully accessible. 50 years old this year. A lot of infrastructure that is getting upgraded because we want to make sure we're doing the right things to set up us up for the next half century. >> Audra: you can check out all the new locations. The greenhouse and wildlife centre are open to the public. At the toronto zoo, audra brown, "CityNews". >> Cynthia: I love that tribute for david onley. He was such a special man and I worked with him for many years here at Citytv. >> Natasha: you did. I just missed working with him. I know he's a scarborough boy. I know from working here at Citytv it's like a family. You worked with him over a decade. What are some of the your fondest memories? >> Cynthia: he was always so full of grace. He was such a wonderful, wonderful lovely human being. He never said a mean word about anybody. He just supported everybody, and up until his death, I still talked to him because he was very concerned about people with disabilities. He was very much an advocate and he was particularly concerned about people on odsp because they have disabilities and he was really working hard to help them and we would talk about that a lot. I loved that man. I miss him so much. >> Natasha: I know you do. That's all I've heard from people that have worked here with him is that, again, it's that family aspect and what you really got to know not just person but the extended family members and almost like they're part of yours, right? >> Cynthia: what my first daughter was born, he personally delivered a book the night before christmas to our home. I still have it today and we still read it every christmas eve. >> Natasha: traditions. >> Cynthia: yes. >> Natasha: we miss him. I wish I had gotten to know him and to work with him as well. But I get to work with you and that is just as good if not better. We've got sunshine again in the forecast. Ear's the thing. This heat and humidity -- not really humidity but sunshine it is going to help to fuel some storms tomorrow. Those storms are currently moving across wisconsin, lake michigan and heading our way. In fact windsor, you may be getting into some of those storms overnight tonight. Some of the heavy rain amounts will be to the north and west of the city so up over the escarpment kitchener cambridge and down through southwestern

ontario. The greatest risks with these are going to be the wind. There's the potential for hail but I don't think it's going to be large hail. We're thinking 2 centimetres here maybe at most. That's about just under an inch in diameter. There's a low to moderate risk of that but those winds could be at 70 to 90 kilometres per hour. Through this weekend, the day with the lowest amount of cloud cover is going to be sunday and it looks like we'll see a more fair -- a bit more sunshine. That's what I'm trying to say, as we head towards the ends of next week. That U.V. index throughout the weekend is going to be at an 8 so make sure you limit your time outdoors during those peak hours. I wanted to show you the provincial morning temperatures. Look at what thunder bay and pickle lake woke up to. Even sault Ste. Marie waking up to 3°. That cool pocket of air is on the move and it will be here wednesday. Here's the thing. When air masses move over land, they change and so it's doing pick up a little bit of warmth by the time it gets here. We'll have a high of 16, 17° wednesday and that's going to be a one-day kind of mini cooldown affair. Tomorrow though, those storms are going to come through in a one-two punch so we've got morning storms and afternoon and we should be in the clear by about 6 p.m. Here at the latest. Tomorrow more storms on monday. Those ones could impact the afternoon drive home so we'll be keeping an eye on the timing of that one. With that mini cooldown next wednesday also comes some gusty winds. Gusts up to 60 kilometres per hour. >> Kyle: it's kyle hocking just flying into the north end of brampton trying to get a look at a closure on bramalea south of queen. Might be able to see it here. There's a collision investigation going on. We do have a section of bramalea closed off because of this. See if we can find where the traffic is blocked off there. Looks like that is it in the middle of your screen. Unsure exactly what the nature of the crash is but we are just arriving on the scene so I can tell you a closure is in place southbound bramalea from clark down to balmoral that's one block. We'll get a little bit more information and have it for you when we get that. Also dealing still with a closure of the toronto bound Q.E.W. in St. Catharines involving a bus. That's a spot you'll have to take a detour around. Tonight's lotto max jackpot is an estimated $70 million plus an estimated 12 max millions. Buy tickets in store or at olg.ca.
