It is time to dive into the wild world of biodiversity with earth rangers. Today they're turning kids into environmental heroes with the cutest animal ambassadors. Please welcome kris gill from earth rangers. Hey, kris. >> Thank you for having us this morning. >> Meredith: are you kidding? We're so excited. Everyone has been talking about this all week long. >> Amazing. >> Meredith: we have three animal ambassadors to get to. What is earth rangers? >> It's the kids conservation organization we're the largest of its kind in the entire world. We're dedicated to taking passion and turning it into positive reaction. Whether that's conservation initiatives or taking on sustainable behaviours like recycling, our goal is to prove that every single person has a role to play in protecting our planet. >> Meredith: I love that and making it successable with the animal ambassadors too. >> Meredith:-BY-BIODIVERSITY, that's a term people have heard before, but might not understand it. >> Biodiversity, bio means life and diversity means diversity. It looks at the life from plants, animals, microorganisms and humans, of course. Every living thing has a role to play. Our planet is like a puzzle piece. We believe every piece of the puzzle should be protected. It's our goal to make sure that the species continue to thrive on the planet and do what they're supposed to do on our planet. >> Meredith: thank goodness for you. This is a great organization and I know we have three cute ambassadors that we're getting to. Is this her tv debut? >> This is not milly's first time. She's done this before. >> Meredith: she's used to the spotlight. This is milly the armadilli. No, armadillo. >> She's a three-banded armadillo. They're the only species that can roll into a perfect ball. Let's see if she wants to do that on camera. >> Meredith: she's not interested. There she is! Oh, she's -- talk about puzzle piece. Look at her! Oh, she's gone! >> Her head and tail, they have the armoured plates on them as well. They're the only species that can roll into a perfect ball

like this, which is really, really cool. >> Meredith: that's unbelievable! She's scared right now? She's chill? What is she? >> She's off the ground right now, this is her resting pose. We'll see if she wants to come out again. She loves being held. She might want to show off the fact that she can stay in a ball. Most armadillos aren't able to do this. This is unique to the three-banded armadillo. It's a perfect adaptation that they have. >> Meredith: where are we finding milly? >> We find them throughout south america. One of the biggest threats they're facing right now is fractureation of their habitat, because the shell is really the only way they can stay protected. They are not very fast, they're not great at getting away from cars. Unfortunately their shell is no match for a car. By protecting their beautiful rainforest habitat, we can ensure that the shell does what it's supposed to do. >> Meredith: yeah. Well, milly, thank you for being here today. >> She's already going back to her dressing room. >> Meredith: true, yeah. And we're going to move on to another shell animal. Her name is shelley. >> Absolutely. So this one, you might recognize a little bit more. Her name is shelley. >> Meredith: look at shelley! Move down a little bit. Shelley. >> Absolutely. She is a midland painted turtle. These are actually our neighbours right here in southern ontario. >> Meredith: I was going to say, I do recognize shelley and maybe her sisters, you know? >> Absolutely. You often see them when you're out in the summer, you know, on the lake. They're usually on a rock or log or something like that basking, soaking up the sun. Earth rangers worked to help protect this species before with our amazing members. We worked with the nature con serssy of canada. Similar to milly, habitat fragmentation is a huge issue. Protecting our wetlands here. >> Meredith: I love that shelley, you're showing your face to the entire "bt" audience. We love you, shell! When we encounter shelley in the wild, what are we to do? >> Let them do their thing. Exactly. Yeah, it is tempting to want to knowr go up and touch one or something like that. Most of the time they'll run away. >> Meredith: I've been feeling that right now. But do not touch the animals. We have one beautiful animal left. >> Yes. >> Meredith: to show the "bt" audience. Isn't this fun? Earth rangers, we love this >> I might have saved the best for last. >> Meredith: I haven't even seen this one -- this is chavez! Toucanette! This is a mini toucan! >> Absolutely. He is a toucanette. Crimson rump there. >> Meredith: yes, booty! >> Absolutely. He's milly's maybe. Found throughout south america. Toucans are an amazing example of biodiversity, they have cover in the rainforest, so much protection from the trees, they're able to evolve in all these spectacular ways. That's why they come in all the different colours that are incredible. >> Meredith: absolutely beautiful. Almost looks like a humming bird. Oh, hello! Hello chavez. This has been amazing. These animals are wonderful.
