CITV - Wednesday, May 22, 2024 - 07:00 p.m. (ET) - Segment #2

today. >> I think we've been on the same page every day, how we are going about everything and as far as the approach and staff and myself. We've made all the right decisions up to this point, hopefully that continues. >> He'll be nice edition when he's ready. Unfortunately for us, he hasn't played for a while. But we do have him in the lineup, he'll give us a little push. >> Reporter: we should note we don't exactly know what the injurious. The team just arrived in dallas and are expected to hold it preseries news conference within the hour. We hope to share some of the thoughts the oilers have coming up tonight on the news hour at 6:00. >> Carole Anne: sounds great, thank you. >>> Once again, the puck drops on game one of the western conference final tomorrow night at 6:30. The dallas stars winning the season series two games to one, but two of those were one goal games. So we could be in for another long series. >>> The eastern conference final gets underway in less than one hour, when the florida panthers visit the new york rangers. Florida is looking to win the east for the second straight year. The rangers had the best regular-season record and haven't won a stanley cup since 1994. >> Announcer: road to the cup brought to you in part by sentinel storage. They shoot, we store. >> Carole Anne: phil is back from his little vacation, nice to have you back. What I was coming down in the studio I noticed it was raining outside. Any idea how long that will last? >> Phil: it's going to be on again, off again at least through overnight and tomorrow. Scattered showers developing further to the north as they pick up more wait on their journey south. Developing war into scattered sean -- thundershowers. We are seeing a few heavier pockets of rain just on the more westerly side of the city. It's going to ebb and flow over the next few hours. A few rumbles of thunder in flashes of lightning going on outside of our city, so we are not ruling out potential. There is a shot of what's coming down over just part of the downtown. Our sky tracker camera had a few droplets on it a minute ago, but doesn't seem to be bad directly overhead. As far as temperatures, it has knocked us down from 13 d. Wind remains light at the moment, but has cooled the city off by a few degrees. If you're outside the city of edmonton, it is definitely still fairly comfortable, definitely below average. Not battle things considered. We did manage to get to 14. >> Carole AnnS of skin cancer are on the rise in canada. Up next, what one local survivor is urging you to do to minimize your risk before it's too late. [ ] Are you ready, ready, ready... Mmm, are you ready? ...to playBig Brother? mo outside the city, you might see a little bit more, but as far as rainfall, they're still going to be some accumulation. Not half bad in the edmonton area, 2-4 millimetres. Typically for the month of may, our city gets about 47 millimetres of rainfall or precipitation. So far we've had 46.3. So with the 2-4 we are still expecting, hitting the nail on the head when it comes to average. Might even be above it with the potential of more rain through next week as we wrap up the month. As far as temperatures go tonight in the city, we are down about 5 degrees or so, might get knocked down another degree because of that rainfall. Still pretty close to average, just the daytime high is our suffering a little bit. Tomorrow, no change from that story. Around 12 degrees, potentially enough to round it up to another degree above. But still going to be below that average of 19, which is normally what we see for this time of year. The next few days, nothing too dramatic. Slowly warming up through friday, into saturday. Back to seasonal daytime high's. Easterly getting gusty for the first half of the week, the second have also looking nice. That warm-up continues into next week and potentially in the mid to high twenties by wednesday, but there is a chance that will kick off thunderstorm development. It's seven days out, much can change between now and then, but the general trend is a lot warmer. >> Carole Anne: thank you. >>> Young, inexperienced drivers can be at high risk for collisions, but one new report is now identifying vehicles that can help keep those drivers safe. >> Reporter: car crashes can happen in seconds. Drivers 16-19 are nearly four times more likely to be in accidents than older drivers. >> Teenagers are more likely to lose control of their vehicle or drive too fast for conditions or make choices experience drivers wouldn't make. >> Reporter: rebecca is a research scientist at the insurance institute for highway safety. She says that's why it's important for young drivers to have a safe car. The ihs teamed up with consumer reports to create a list of recommended used vehicles for teens. There are 58 to choose from, ranging in price from 5800 to almost $20,000. All the cars made the grade in a variety of crash tests. Every vehicle also comes with automatic emergency braking. >> We find teenagers especially benefit from having these systems. They can intervene in the event of imminent crash. >> Things parents should absolutely be looking for are the newest safety features. >> Reporter: consumer reports says parents should steer clear of sports cars and extra-large vehicles. It they can be hard to manoeuvre. >> We talk about the goldilocks. These are the vehicles that are too fast, too slow, orange too big or too small. >> Reporter: used car prices skyrocketed during the pandemic, but here are some good news. One recent report showed prices down nearly 7 percent from last year. >> Carole Anne: london drugs calls it a deeply distressing situation. The implications now that the company says it can't and won't pay multimillion dollar ransom after last month's cyber attack. The cyber crime syndicate is demanding $25 million, end of london drugs doesn't pay up, it's going to leak data it claims to have stolen from the retailer. The demand was posted to the dark web. >> Lock bit has been one of the most prolific ransomware operations since 2019. They had launched successful attacks against thousands of organizations. They are known to have reaped more than 100 million in ransom demands. >> Reporter: it's not known what kind of information block bit claims to hold, but the deadline for the ransom is thursday. Lock bit says london drugs offered to pay $8 million. The retailer neither confirming or denying. In a statement, london drugs says it's unable and unwilling to pay the ransom. >> I heard about it, it's terrible.
