peoples. >>they're fighting for their lives right now. They'e out there in survival mode trying to fight for their life. >>reporter: according to indigenous services canada... First nations peoples account for just 3 point 4 per cent of albertans. The province's numbers show between 2016 and 2022... That demographic accounted for one out of every five unintentional opioid deaths. In 2022 alone... That number went up to nearly one in four deaths. >>it's very disheartening to see the disparity growing and not getting less so that tells us that there is not an adequate response. >>reporter: doctor esther tailfeathers has been on the frontlines of the opioid fight. Born and raised on the blood tribe... She's seen first hand the impact of these drugs. >>our communtiies are suffering and y heart goes out to the mothers and the families who've lost people. A ministry of mental health and addiction spokesperson says the province is partnering with indigenous communities to build five recovery facilties. They'll take a land-based approach to support recovery and reconnection with their culture. Tailfeathers fears support will come too late. With 2022 numbers just made public.. Erik bay, global news >>lisa: 'it's a way of keeping lauren jarvis' spirit alive'....that's the view of family and friends of a murdered edmonton woman who want to keep holding annual walks in her memory... Jarvis was found dead in her westmount home in april of last year and her downstairs neighbour was charged with her murder. This is the second annual 'justice for lauren' walk...which started in the sunshine outside kinsmen sports centre earlier saturday. Family and friends want the focus to be on the way lauren lived. >>it's not based just around what happened to her, it's based around who she was...and remembering lauren for the person that she was and the woman that she could still be if something like this didn't happen. >>lisa: the walk is supporting edmonton's victims of homicide support society...a group that lost loved ones to homicide. Over the past two years... More than one thousand homes have been demolished in calgary to make way for new houses. Only 61 of those were saved and moved to another location at a time when alberta is experiencing a housing crisis. Our carolyn kury de castillo witnessed the painstaking process of moving an entire home. >>reporter: houses are coming down throughout calgary's inner city to make way to for new homes but in this case the 1950's bungalow has been spared. It's about hit the road...taking a trip to an new town. >>there's a lot of demand for it and there's demand on our end as well with people looking for really good quality recycled homes >>reporter: the team first comes in to strip the basement. Later beams are inserted and they jack the house up to get it off the foundation. >>our members trim they are miracle workers. They work so hard. It's a physically gruelling job. >>reporter: with a blocking system that looks like a jenga game, workers raise the house with a hydraulic jack system. >> That raises the house in a unified way where it's all level. So there's no structural stress on the house. >>reporter: in this case, they spun the house around to save a city tree. From there the house is slid out and put on the beams that it will travel on. Loads of permits and prep work happen before the move, ensuring the house fits under wires and cars aren't parked on the route. The co owner of wade's house moving says business has shifted over the years from moving buildings and barns to recycling houses. 10:03 15 years ago we would do maybe 30% of that and 70% moving buildings and now it is probably 80% of our businesses our recycled houses sales >>everything is just so expensive so to be able to find a home and have it set up for a fraction of the cost of building or buying new is just huge. She says it can be in the landowner's best interest cost wise to have the home moved but not every home is wanted as is. They have to reject many homes because of their condition. Tons of waste is spared from going into landfills by moving a home. Larose says it would make sense for incentives to be offered to homeowners to recycle. >>not only for our company, but for the landowners that there were something available that could help find the overall process that could make it happen even more it's hard to catch a glimpse of house travel through city because they slip through the middle the night. This one rode down mcknight boulevard on friday and south to a community near taber were another family will be soon be calling the house their home.
