It also destroyed roads and hundreds of homes. As heidi petracek reports, many nova scotians are still waiting for help that was promised by the province. >> Reporter: when floodwaters rushed into streets and homes last july it caused more than $170 million and insured damage. And the flood burst through the back door and into this basement. Photo showing the aftermath. The water had been high enough to make appliances float. The estimated restoration costs $143,000. The insurance capped at $50,000. >> Speaker: that left me with $90,000. >> Reporter: applying for which pledged up to $200,000 for homeowners but after months of waiting and piles of paperwork, they were offered $6000. He appealed and was then offered $15,000. At 74 years old he has taken out a second mortgage to pay for the $60,000 he has left. >> Speaker: what would you say someone said we will put your home back to the weight that it originally was, just pay the contractors. That's all I want. >> Reporter: the province is processing 500 applications from the floods. 1100 had been paid out. >> Speaker: it has been traumatic for those who have not been paid out. But it has been challenging for us as well. >> Reporter: flooding is the most costly in terms of property damage. >> Reporter: creating a tool to help municipalities prepare for and prevent urban flooding which is expected to increase in frequency. >> Speaker: we are expecting more short duration intense rainfall events and everyone knows examples of those across canada. >> Reporter: this stress has taken its toll. Edmonton fire crews were called out to millwood strip. >> Erin: mall battle a fire this morning. >> Erin: crews arrived to find flames coming from a business in the complex. A second alarm is called 15 minutes later and at one point there was at least 40 firefighters on scene. Edmonton fire rescue said it was confined to the one business although there is smoke damage to at least one other store. The fire was brought under control just after 330. >> Vinesh: one man remains in but it is still not fully out. It was a busy weekend for edmonton police. >> Vinesh: one man remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries, after he was shot by an officer on saturday night. It happened at a shell gas station at 93rd street and 144th ave. An officer walked into the business just before eight o'clock, and there was a man inside with a weapon. A confrontation took place and the officer fired his gun, hitting the man. The officer was not injured. Police also found a taser at the scene. The alberta serious incident response team is now investigating. A 29-year old man was rushed to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, following another shooting on saturday night. This one near southgate mall. Police were called to the parkade of an apartment complex. On 108-a street and 47th avenue, following reports of gunshots. The investigation continues and one person was taken to hospital. After this crash in the beverly neighbourhood on sunday afternoon. A vehicle went right through the front of this liquor store at 117th ave and 34th street. A global news crew was told that a staff member and the driver suffered injuries. While it may be monday it is it is approaching 5:33 A.M. while it may be monday it is also game day and, no doubt, there's excitement in the air. All of the money raised from the walk goes to trying to find a cause, and cure, for the auto-immune disease. Canada has one of the highest rates of m-s in the world. Attendees say events like this helps to bring together those impacted by the condition. >> Julia nimilowich: we all know somebody who has ms. Whether it's a friend or family member, and it doesn't matter. Funds raised also helps support programs and services for albertans living with ms. >> Vinesh: a unique graduation was held in our city over the weekend. >> Vinesh: 16 service dogs graduated and are now ready to work with clients. The dogs spent between two to three years in training through dogs with wings. The canines will go on to work in many different settings, including 'kids with autism' or as companions. Those who worked with the animals during training say, it's a special moment. >> Speaker: seeing today it is a full circle moment that keeps me doing what I'm doing. A kid it keeps me here. I think this is the best part of my job. Sometimes you think that they won't remember you but today he saw me and he recognized me. Fort saskatchewan we are seeing fog in that area and that is not the only place. Lots of low-lying fog in and around edmonton. So watch for that on or drive it could reduce visibility. Was anthony henday and the yellow head traffic slow-moving wealth do they are not see much fog along that area. Same with northeast anthony henday river crossing. A lot of the bridge crossings are experiencing heavy fog. Looking like it's not too bad getting reports along the west henday's lanes we are having reports of a possible stall but it doesn't look like it's affecting traffic. It looks like it will not slow you down on the west end today. Southwest henday, traffic is moving well do this area. Taking a look along the highways, we are seeing clear highway 16 making your way into edmonton from spruce grove, west anthony henday and the whitemud looks great. Just a bit of traffic there. Just again on your drive, watch that you may see some low fog also construction slowing things down which we can see here. All directions are down to just two lanes so it does bottleneck and as traffic volume starts to pick up that will get very slow for us this monday morning commute. That's a look at your ok tire
