>> Erin: we have two new surveys. One on an uptick in interest around the upcoming olympic games in paris. For more on that let's bring in sean simpson to take a look at the numbers. Good morning, let's start with the first full. Many canadians want to take a summer vacation but how many aren't likely to travel over the next few months? >> Sean: we have 79 percent who say they really want to take a vacation this year and that is up about 8 points from last year. It has been a tough year and canadians needed break from it but only 62 percent of canadian say that they are likely to travel this summer. And that is out 4 points but that still leaves a gap of 17 points between those that want to travel and those that can and the gap is affordability. >> Erin: let's talk a bit more about that. It has been the conversation for the last year. So how many respondents can afford a vacation this summer? >> Sean: well, we have about three quarters that say they need to scale back their plans this year. Now some of them will not travel at all but we know 62 percent will. So the vacations will look different this year. So even if you are travelling you may not travel as far you may not travel for as long. And it may not be as luxurious as it was when the pandemic came to an end. >> Erin: let's turn to the second poll with the paris olympics. There seems to be renewed interest in this year's games. >> Sean: 58 percent of canadians say they are interested in following the games and that is up almost double from the interest that was expressed with the tokyo or beijing games. The location may have something to do with it. But I think what has been happening is that the canadians have been facing a difficult situation we have affordability concerns, climate change, wildfires, we have war in the middle east, war in ukraine. In the summer olympics may present themselves as a bit of a antidote to what ails us. There's been a lot of division both within canada and globally and canadians are maybe looking at the summer games as a way to heal as global citizens and to cheer on our favourite teams and athletes. >> Erin: I also understand that they were asked about what events they would be more likely to follow during these games and went did they have to say? >> Sean: that is right. For most people they are interested in seeing some of the events that we do not have the opportunity to see on tv very often. So like gymnastics or aquatics and track and field. They are just no on tv to the same extent as other sports. Men are more interested in some of the bigger team sports like soccer, rugby sevens for example, or basketball. But the one I found most amusing is 5 percent of canadian men are most looking forward to breakdancing. That is a new sport being added to it they games this year. I don't know a lot about it. But I know there's a lot of canadians competing in it. >> Erin: that is sure to be a good one thank you so much for this, sean. Definitely some breaks throughout the weekend as you will see into the edmonton area. Along the mountain parks jasper is picking up a little bit. You could see quite a bit of rain even some hail and high winds. The rest of the province is not bad. It's nice when things heat up and then you have the son showers or the light showers it keeps things green and fresh. Whitecourt seeing some rain into saturday.
