Cincinnati baseball assistant coaches fired over 'potential NCAA infractions' investigation

The University of Cincinnati has fired two baseball staff members as part of an investigation into "potential NCAA infractions" within the team.

Assistant coach Kyle Sprague and director of baseball operations Andy Nagel were dismissed from the team on May 17, the university announced Wednesday.

“On May 8, University of Cincinnati Athletics began an internal review of potential NCAA infractions involving the baseball program. Although the review is ongoing, Sprague and Nagel have been dismissed based on initial findings. UC is cooperating with the NCAA in this matter. Since this is an ongoing investigation, we will not be commenting further at this time," Cincinnati said in a statement.

The university did not say what the potential infractions were. A Cincinnati source confirmed to the Cincinnati Enquirer, part of the USA TODAY Network, these infractions do not involve betting on Bearcat baseball games. The university is not commenting further as it is an ongoing investigation.

Sprague has served as the hitting and infielders coach of the Bearcats since 2017, according to the athletic department's website. Nagel has been with Cincinnati since 2015 and was a high school baseball assistant coach prior to joining the team.

The news of Sprague and Nagel's departure came as the Bearcats face East Carolina in the American Athletic Conference tournament. Cincinnati is 24-32 this season.
