Uk prime minister rishi sunak has called a snap election stunning. Even some members of his own conservative party. So after 14 years in power, the tories, who are trailing in the polls, could face a wipeout. In terms of conservative leaders, sunak is good on paper, but the financier and oxford graduate has often seemed out of step with the public and his party. We certainly need some changes. Why an election now is the question. Inflation is nearly at a three year low, but the tory party leader's popularity, well, it's nearly at record lows as well. So in less than two months, all of the party leaders will have to find a way to inspire voters and actually get them to turn up at the polls. The 63 year old died alongside his foreign minister and six others when their helicopter crashed in the country's mountainous northwest region earlier this week. The council, in charge of assisting haiti's transition for its next head of state, says it expects a multinational security force to help restore public safety to be operational in the coming days. Kyle benning has more on the international effort to stabilize the country. >> It's a country that has been in crisis for nearly three years. Haitians still living with violence on streets as police look to gain back territory. The caribbean nation has seen armed militias take control of public infrastructure following unrest from the 2021 presidential assassination, but united nations backed reinforcements will soon be available. On tuesday, the council aimed at guiding haiti's presidential transition, noted it had a productive meeting with the national police and that troops from the multinational security support mission should be deployed by the end of the month. In a statement on social media platform x, the council says, quote, whether it concerns the composition, objectives, rules of engagement and health control of the troops, everything will be coordinated and supervised by haitian police authorities. The bulk of the security team is made up of kenyan soldiers, with the african nation offering 1000 officers. And on wednesday, the kenyan president kicked off his trip to the us, becoming the first african head of state to hold an official visit since 2008. Key thing here is that this multinational security support mission is exactly that a support mission, a support mission of the institutions of the haitian state, not a replacement for it. President william ruto is set to hold meetings with joe biden on wednesday and thursday, with haiti expected to be one of the larger topics of discussion between the leaders. American officials say haiti is in a dynamic situation where the country's police union saying 80 officers were killed, died in accidents or disappeared last year. This is going to require an adaptive, flexible approach, but one guided by certain core functions and operations. >> Hey, kenya has laid that out. Its work that out in close collaboration with the united states and it has consulted closely with the un on this along the way. >> Earlier this year, ottawa earmarked more than $80 million towards the un security mission and has sent armed forces members to help train jamaican soldiers who will be part of the un security force. The rcmp has also deployed officers to assist the haitian national police. Kyle benning, "global news" >> New data from interpol is confirming canada ranks among the world's top worst countries for auto theft. The international law enforcement agency says more than 1500 vehicles stolen in canada have been identified by police around the world since february. This information comes after the rcmp integrated canada's database for stolen vehicles with interpol earlier this year. The agency says thieves are attracted to canada's abundant supply of high value models, such as suvs and crossovers. All right, a wildlife photographer in montreal captured a stunning showdown between a fox and a goose. And here it is. Alana block says she was photographing birds at montreal's botanical garden last week when she saw a fox trying to catch this canada goose. Well, she snuck up in some trees and managed to capture this dramatic scene. So who? One, you might ask. All right, block says. The fox eventually gave up and went off to hunt a squirrel. Well, last week on our show, if you recall, we had a group on called school strike for climate halifax who were demanding the provincial government take climate change more seriously in the wake of scrapping the coastal protection act. The youth said that after having several meetings with the government on this subject, they are incredibly frustrated that the act was not passed and upset with the minister for giving them a false sense of hope that it would pass well. The department of environment and climate change was watching tv. Our show, and reached out to get the minister on our show to respond to that interview. So here he is. Tim holman is the minister of environment and climate change. And joining us on "global" news morning. Good morning, minister. How are you? >> Good, good. How are you paul? I'm doing very well. >> So let's get right into it, I guess. First of all, thanks for watching the show and for joining us this morning with your response. My guest last week said they felt pretty confident after meetings with you that this act would pass, but it did not. And now they feel betrayed and ignored. So what happened between those meetings with them and eventually the move to scrap the act earlier this year? >> Well, first off, I want to commend, young nova scotians for being so engaged in public policy, you know, i, as minister, I highly value their input. That's that's why I established the youth climate council here in nova scotia. A lot of analysis went into, you know, how coastal protection, should unfold in this province. And, in the end, as government, we decided an action plan was best suited, because when that act was passed in 2019, you didn't have the environmental goals and climate change reduction act. We didn't even have a climate plan, in 2019, we didn't have a clean energy plan. So coastal protection is one big important component in our overall climate strategy. And I want to assure all nova scotians that we take the protection of our coastlines very, very seriously. And that's why we've deployed immediately resources for coastal protection. That's why we are now actively collaborating and working with our municipalities, who will zone, coastal protection, they're responsible for, for zoning, and we want to work with them and partner with them to make sure nova scotians do not build in hazardous areas. And then, of course, we support local informed decision making. We've put in place, the information nova scotians need to know where not to build. And we put in place navigators to help them interpret that information. So there's lots happening. >> Well, according to an article I read from dal, the lengthy disclaimer you need to agree to before you can access any kind of map online, they say, immediately erodes the trustworthiness of the whole thing. And they also say, moreover, why people may trust any good news they see in its data. They may still be at risk due to the tools, many data and design flaws. So any response to some of the opinions on the tools that are available? >> And certainly there's a diversity of opinion on how coastal protection should take place. And, you know, we've we've implemented a very comprehensive balanced plan that's based on science and the science we use comes from the international panel on climate change through the united nations. So this is very reputable data. And of course, I mean our coastline is very diverse, constantly changing, so we'll be updating the information of the known hazardous areas, will be scaling that up.
