How conditions are changing for the better. >>> The countdown is on to the calgary marathon. A sold-out event to kick off a milestone year. [ ] >> Announcer: you are watching global calgary. This is global news at noon. >> Bindu: good afternoon. The inglewood aquatic centre is set to close its doors at the end of this year five years after council made the decision to permanently close the pool. The city says it has exceeded it's expected lifespan by more than 20 years and needs major electrical repairs. Meghan cobb is following the story and she joins us now. Swimmers only have a few more months to get a lapse in inglewood. >> Reporter: that is right bin due. One summer left to take advantage of the pool in the heart of the community where it has more than 60 years of community. The community rallied to save the pool in 2019. Council made the decision to close the inglewood aquatic centre along with the beltline as part of budget cuts but a save the pool's campaign prompted the city to find additional funding in 2021 to keep it open until the nearby mnp centre expansion was complete. With the discovery of the electrical issues and the possibility the electrical system could fail along with the price take to repair the problem the city has moved up the closing date to december 22nd of this year. There's no risk to the public using the pool between now and then in the city will work with all swimmers who called us home to find a new place to swim. >> I think we are all aware of the demand for swim lessons which is back and it's good to see calgarians looking for the crucial life still -- life skill. We are providing all the swim lessons we can. When inglewood is closed our staff will be located to other communities which allow us to expand hours and we are staffing up as well. >> Reporter: all 13 city-owned pools are in need of electrical repairs and with the exception of inglewood the city will be doing those repairs three pools at a time over the next couple years to extend the facility lifespan. The canyon meadows and sir winston churchill pools will close july 1st a few months while the bob pool is already closed for repairs. As for inglewood this city is planning a celebration likely in the fall so everyone who has been coming here over previous generations can come and have one last swim and say goodbye to the facility before its tone learn down. Bindu? >> Bindu: more reactions to come at five and six today. Thank you megan.

>>> The recent weather in alberta has reduced the risk in our province but officials warn that could change quickly when it comes to wildfires. Right now there are 30 wildfires burning in the province and 20 are still burning from last season. All fires are under control or being held and that includes a fort mcmurray fire where residents have been allowed to go home. Fire officials say while conditions are favourable now it's important albertans continue to practice fire safety 77 percent of fires this season have been caused by people. >> Despite our efforts to remind visitors about taking extra care with any action that could cause a wildfire over them a long weekend 25 abandoned campfires were detected in the calgary forest area. These were extinguished by patrol staff but if wildfire danger was higher it could have led to new, catastrophic wildfire starts over the long weekend. >> Bindu: by this time last year 520,000 hectares have burned in our province compared to 29,000 hectares this year. >>> A live look out there right now. We are getting some of the wet weather here in the city as well and we are welcoming it because of the drought conditions tiffany. >> Tiffany: absolutely. We had 20 millimetres of rainfall over the past several days. It feels like a lot but in the grand scheme of things it's not wiping out the drought. It is helping those fire conditions in central and southern alberta but notice how northern alberta and northern bc , we are still seeing moderate to very high fire danger risk. That is something to keep in mind because we are seeing warmer afternoon chap -- temperatures which are drying things out from the little bit of rein they have been getting. Conditions have been helpful but we continue to monitor very closely. 11° this afternoon and the risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. A chance of pocked -- patchy fog overnight into friday morning. Saturday afternoon 16°. Both days at 40 percent chance of thunderstorms. The trend continues and we do warm up a little bit which is nice. I will let you know how sunday is shaping up and sunday is a big day in the city. At the calgary marathon is being held. I will let you know how the forecast is shaping up. >> Leslie: are you trained up? >> Tiffany: I wish. Some people are doing 60 k. >> Leslie: do they have a half k.? >> Tiffany: I think they have a 1.5 for kids. >> Leslie: by kids you mean? >> Tiffany: kids and kids at heart. >> Leslie: I like to hear that. This is a problem 1 northbound on stoney approaching 96th avenue. Slow moving traffic and the ramp is blocked northbound stoney onto 96 avenue. And we have something very interesting going on here. Never seen it but the matrix has arrived and now we just caught a quick glimpse of it.
