Calling it an essential step to peace in the region. >> Blake: the decision was met with anger from israel with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu calling it a reward for terrorism. >> Dallas: although a largely symbolic move, all eyes are on other western nations to see if anyone will follow suit. Mike armstrong reports. [ Applause ] >> Reporter: in three european capitals coordinated announcements. Madrid, the spanish prime minister... In oslo, the norwegian prime minister, and in dublin, the irish prime minister. Each saying they will recognize the state of palestine officially may 28th and that they hope others will follow. >> I'm confident that further countries will join us. >> Reporter: the reaction from israel was immediate. The country's foreign minister standing with the families of hostages says the move supports hamas atrocities while the israeli prime minister said it was rewarding terrorism. Israel announced wednesday it will allow israelis to return to former west bank settlements, access blocked for an evacuation order. Under international law, the settlements are illegal. Israel is recalling the ambassador to the three countries. >> Ireland, norway and spain are telling hamas in a loud and clear voice that the october 7th massacre pays off. >> Reporter: the news was greeted much different by palestinians. In the west bank, a spokesman for the palestinian authority says a two-state solution is the only path to peace. While in gaza, there is hope that the new recognition leads to change. We have the right to live like other countries, this man says, to have a state and to live in freedom. Whether the move by the three governments leads others to follow is the big question. In each, recognizing a palestinian state analysts say will play well domestically. >> The result of the vote is as follows... >> Reporter: 143 countries voted earlier this month at the U.N. to recognize a palestinian state. The addition of 3 more is not moving the needle in the U.S. or canada. >> Canada's long standing position has been to support -- to call for a two-state solution. >> Reporter: one thinking the three countries are saying is that while they will recognize a palestinian state, they insist they also stand behind israel's right to defend itself. But what was legitimate and even necessary, they say, has dragged on too far. Mike armstrong, global news, montreal. >> Blake: live look right now

at westminster in london. British prime minister rishi sunak has called a national election. That is going to be happening on july 4th. >> Now is the moment for britain to choose its future. This election will take place at a time when the world is more dangerous than it has been since the end of the cold war. >> Dallas: sunak says king charles granted his request wednesday to dissolve parliament which his office says will be suspended friday. This announcement comes months sooner than expected with the support for his party dwindling. >>> Interpol says canada ranks among the top ten countries for auto theft. The international law enforcement agency says 1500 vehicles stolen have been found around the world. >> Blake: and rcmp integrated its database with interpol's earlier this year, and saying that thieves are attracted to the high end models such as suv's and crossovers. Throughout the pandemic, the canadian government spent billions on more than 800 million rapid tests. >> Dallas: in many places it will come to an end. >> Blake: heidi petracek says rapid testing may soon be based on the ability to pay. >> Reporter: there used to be lineups for free covid-19 rapid tests. Today it's no waiting for bill who picked one up at his local library in halifax. >> If we have been somewhere where we hear someone else had covid or gotten -- have the sniffles or something, we use the test. >> Reporter: the days of ottawa sending millions of tests to the provinces are numbered. Health canada saying in a statement... New brunswick took that as its cue to announce it will stop handing them when supplies run out likely the end of next month. Saskatchewan did the same in february. >> People who are wealthy can continue to buy them. >> That bothers one infection control epidemiologist says it should be part of the plan. >> We're taking the word out of public health. >> Reporter: nova scotia is planning its next steps as is alberta which stresses no decision has been made. Other provinces aren't saying much about what the plan is. Ontario, for example, would only say through a spokesperson that the province has tens of millions of rapid antigen tests available to the public and wouldn't say when they expire. But lab based testing by medical referral remains available, and for one expert is the better tool. Because rapid tests perform differently for different people. >> The interpretation capacity has to improve and that means that the sensitivity of these tests needs to improve. >> Reporter: the experts agree tests need to improve and detect other respiratory viruses like rsv and influenza. That innovation is in the works likely rendering these obsolete. Heidi petracek, global news, halifax. >> Blake: ready to run.
