A recent report shows the crisis is even more prevalent in first nations communities. Eric bay reports. >> Opioids have had a lasting effect in jody's family. >> I have an uncle who lost his daughter into addiction. >> Similar losses are being felt in disproportionate numbers by other first nations families across alberta. Data recently released by the provincial government shows the rate of unintentional opioid deaths are more than eight times higher among first nations and peoples. >> They are out there trying to you know, be in survival mode and trying to fight for their life. >> According to indigenous services canada, first nations people account for just 3.4 percent of albertans. The province's number show between 2016 and 2022 that this demographic represented 20% of all unintentional opioid deaths in 2022 alone this number went up to nearly one in four deaths. >> It's very disheartening to see this disparity growing and not being less. This tells us there's not an adequate response. >> Reporter: she's on the front lines of the opioid fight raised in the blood tribe she has seen firsthand the impact of these drugs. >> Our communities are suffering and my heart goes out to the mothers and families who have lost people. These numbers mean something to us. >> She wants more wraparound supports and his statement to global news the mental health and addiction spokesperson says the province is partnering with indigenous communities to build five recovery facilities. They will take a land-based approach to support recovery and reconnection with their culture. And it's been like this for two and a half years and then suddenly to get charged $15,000 it seems really strange. I only have one credit card now it's chopped up in little bits. [ Laughter ] it will be able to make any credit card purchases unfortunately. >> Global news also confirmed another customer was charged $19,000 with another fee of $33,000 pending. They're trying to see honey people were impacted. In a statement a association says they are aware some customers have issues with their monthly billing and they confirmed their systems have not been hacked and customer data is safe. They say as of late saturday afternoon, most users had their incorrect charges fixed. She was found dead in her edmonton home in april 2023. Her downstairs neighbour was charged with her murder. This is the second annual justice for lauren walk family and friends want the focus to be on the way lauren lived. >> It's not just based around what happened to her. It's based around who she was and remembering lauren for the person she was in the woman that you know, she could still be something like this didn't happen. >> Victims of homicide support society, a group that offers help to people that have lost loved ones to murder. >>> With another busy well first season looming they say more action need to be taken for what she calls a missing piece of firefighter efforts. Mental health. Researchers from the university of victoria spoke with 30 people affected by wildfires on social and emotional impact on their communities. Residents say they feel a sense of grief and trauma in cuties like lytton where they evacuated at a moments notice and they were not able to return home. And those living in wildfire prone communities say they face anxiety and a heightened sense of fear this time of year. >> A thing there's an opportunity here to boost up local resources to maybe something around groups, also just having conversations like we do right now for people are experiencing these fire season so they can understand this is normal if you are struggling or if this is difficult or you had that heightened anxiety during the summer months at that something we can have these conversations are people around us and share we are feeling this way. >> Researchers are now planning to join organizations and officials for their findings into find ways to implement these strategies.
