Topping the news right now, a new survey from the city of calgary shows calgarians are growing more concerned about their quality of life. >> Spring 2024 survey also shows many calgarians question the value they received for their tax dollars. Meghan cobb joins us this morning with a look at what else was found in the survey. Good morning. >> Reporter: good morning, dallas. The survey is done twice a year in the spring and the fall to gauge how calgarians are feeling about key issues in our city. In the city's spring 2024 survey, 71% of those asked rated their quality of life as good

which is 7 percentage points lower than it was a year ago. When asked if calgary is a great place to make a life, 69% agreed. Down 3 points from the spring of 2023. When asked if the city is a great place to make a living, 73%, that's down a full percentage points leLESS -- 63% agreed. That's down a full a full ten percentage points. The top three issues for calgarians are infrastructure, traffic, and roads at 29%. Followed by homelessness, poverty, and affordable housing 1 in 4 calgarians. With crime, safety, and policing coming in at third at 22%. City council is set to discuss the findings tomorrow. Calgary's composting facility in the southeast is being expanded. >> Dallas: thanks, meghan. Calgary's composting facility in the southeast is being expanded. The official ground breaking is happening this morning at the shepard waste management facility. >> Blake: approved by council in february 2022. At the time, the budget was $50 million. But last november, global news reported the costs had ballooned by 38.3 million. The city attributed the cost overruns to increases in commodity prices, a labor shortage, resource competition, and inflationary pressures. Those cost overruns were addressed during budget adjustments, and the city says it will not impact taxes or utility rates. >> Dallas: the expansion will provide an additional 60,000 tonnes per year of processing capacity. The current composting facility opened in 2017 and processing more than 100,000 tons of food and yard waste every year. The expansion is needed to accommodate calgary's growth. >>> 13,600 people walked, wheeled and and ran in the 60th edition of the calgary marathoners on sunday and they completed their race ranging in distance from as short as 1.2 kilometres all the way up to the ultra, 60 kilometres. This year, marathon organizers invited an indigenous group to set up a tent at the finish line with members from alberta first nations coming together to take part in the events. >> As carolyn kury de castillo reports, it was part of celebrating a love more for running and taking back the trails their ancestors travelled. >> Reporter: at 69 years old, teresa campiou is new to competing in half marathons, but growing up on the drift pile cree nation, running was a part of life. >> We were quite aways from all kinds of activities, so we have to run. >> She crossed the finish line on sunday as usual wearing moccasins, part of the indigenous runners team at the calgary marathon. >> While I'm running, I will call on my ancestors, I will communicate with my relatives that have passed on, and it's a way of bringing them closer to me without any interruption. Anita cardinal started a running group in edmonton after noticing a lack of diversity in the running community. >> Our ancestors have ran on this land since time immemorial. >> Reporter: the edmonton lawyer and ultra marathoner says she inherited her love of running from her father who used to run to the next town to visit her mother. >> He'd be there in a flash. And so when I was a kid, one of the greatest things I remember about my childhood how much my dad was running with us. >> Reporter: anita says running holds a powerful cultural significance for her. >> It's a place of peace and gratitude. Running is healing. Running is prayer. Running is ceremony. >> When I run on the trails, I take time to stop and touch the trees and touch the leaves, and look at the flowers when I'm running. It's a time to pause and reflect on myself. >> Reporter: as she is running, she connects with her son, daughter, and granddaughter who have passed away. She says the grief of the losses are compounded with intergenerational trauma, but runners here say there is intergenerational healing with kids, teens and elders running together. started to clear out. When you get cold, it's there. It chills you right to the bone.
