>>> Amazon is officially opening its 11th facility in alberta this morning, right here in our city. The 2.8 million square-foot warehouse features innovative new logistics technology, making it amazon's first ever ever -- robotics fulfilment centre in calgary. It opens at a time when calgary's unemployment rate is 7.7 percent, due in part of the population boom. The same time, employment demand is high. Amazon says the new facility will employ more than 1500 people. The business council of alberta says the province is an attractive place to invest right now. >> We have some of the nation's largest airlines and trucking companies and logistics facilities and world-class airports. I think some of that is contributing to us being attractive for amazon to put big new facilities and state-of-the-art robotics facilities up. >> Dallas: he says the influx of new people to alberta is good for the economy, but challenging when it comes to the current housing crisis. Our meghan cobb will take is live inside the new facility throughout global news morning starting at 6:00. >>> An eye-opening report shows the state of calgary's transit system when it comes to future funding to keep it running. The national independent report found without operating money from the provincial or federal governments, transit service in calgary will be threatened. One option is a potential vehicle livy. >> One of the things that has been done in places across the world, but also in canada, montréal, is the vehicle levy. It looks at charging fees that go to transit operations. I'm also seeing things like whole bunch of other fees. What we want to do is really understand the impact of different revenue tools and what you might need for them to pay for transit services so we don't have this annual conversation of shortfalls and what may run the service in the future. >> Dallas: the city has pitching and $32 million for low-income transit passes on top of the province's $6 million.

>>> Here in the city, the lights have been out in many calgary neighbourhoods. A city of calgary audit has reveal thousands of streetlight problems were taking far too long to fix and are putting people at risk. Crews are busy getting the lights back on. >> Reporter: far too many communities were being left in the dark. Burned out streetlights putting kids at risk. >> I opened the preschool in the morning a lot in the wintertime, and there's no lights in the surrounding area. Through the school zones especially as start as it -- as soon as it starts to get dark. >> Reporter: becky says it got so bad, one whole row of lights about one kilometre long was out for days and days. >> There has been a string of lights that seemed to remain in the dark threw that time. Walking my dog, especially in the wintertime, it does become a challenge and safety concern because we can't see the ice. >> Reporter: the city knew it had a problem. An audit revealed repairs and replacements weren't getting done fast enough and an urgent repair like the one involving pedestrians and southwood was supposed to take 14 days. It was taking on average 77. >> We have a very severe winter and we get freeze thaw cycles in the city, so we do have to repair those and we have a number of other challenges with the system itself. >> Reporter: something needed to be done, and it was. Someone flipped a switch. >> Now we're down to ten day response times, less than 500 outages where there was over 5000 at one point. So we are thankful for the processes we've had, and also the team. >> Reporter: the city says it has over 105,000 street lights. They can get up to 800 calls for repairs each month. They say too much is riding on keeping the lights on. >> We want our kids to be safe. >> I'm very happy to feel -- see the numbers going down. I hope I don't have to make that call to 311 in the future. >> Dallas: alberta's recent weather has reduced the fire risk in the province, but officials warn that can change quickly. Right now there are 31 wildfires burning in our province. Twenty of them were still burning from last season. All fires are under control or being held, including the fort mcmurray fire, where residents have been allowed to go home. Authority say well conditions are favourable now, it's important for albertans to practice fire safety. 77 percent of fires the season are human caused. >> Despite our efforts to remind albertans about the importance of taking extra care with any action that could cause fire, over the may long weekend, 25 abandoned campfire -- campfires in the calgary forest area. These were quickly extinguished, but if wildfire danger had been higher, this could have led to w catastrophic wildfire starts >> Dallas: by this time last year, 520,000 hectares had burned at our province, compared to the 29,000 hectares this year. I would call that good news. >> Leslie: I would call that good news. All the rain we've been getting is certainly helping. Not enough to solve the problem. I'm surprised to hear they caught so many campfires smouldering. That is shocking. So they pour the water, do the dance, for the water again and you do that as many times as you need to. Anything we can do to stop the fires from starting is going to be the key, isn't it? There's a little sliver of sunrise for you right there. We will get up here as well. Then it will be the official kickoff to the morning, but the sun is up right now. Here's a look at the temperatures right now. Jasper at 3, banff 2. There's the rain moving in for the weekend. Continuation of the rain we've been seeing over the past few weeks. And possibly a snowflake or 2 through the mountains on the weekend.
