It happened while the team was walking with his mother near st. Albert, but there are still questions about what led up to the violent assault. As sarah ryan reports, we are learning more about the young victim and how he's being remembered. >> Reporter: christine matheson says he was like ace on to her. >> Fun-loving, extremely active outdoors. Heart of gold. >> Reporter: her son seth and broten were born just two weeks apart. Matheson says he would go to hockey tournaments with her family. >> He never gave up. >> Reporter: but tuesday night, his life was tragically cut short. The 15-year-old was walking with his mom when he was attacked. Police and paramedics tried to save him. >> Unfortunately, he didn't make it. >> It's very difficult, the worst thing that can happen in a school district. >> Reporter: best friends went to lauren aikens junior high. Matheson says seth didn't believe her when she broke the news. >> It was a very difficult conversation. This is a 15-year-old boy. It's not meant to happen. >> Reporter: saint albert public is offering counselling back to students and staff. >> Everyone rallied around, hold this family with all their heart. >> Reporter: the men previously known to police, keith james landry, was arrested shortly after the deadly attack. He has since been charged with second-degree murder. Police say he and the victim knew each other. Back at the scene, a cross has been carved into a tree. A few bouquets of flowers lie on the ground, remembering broden. >> Is just like every other boy in every other house. Loving and deserving, and he should still be here. >> Reporter: sarah ryan, global news. >> Dallas: we do have an update on the condition of bc serial killer robert pickton, who was assaulted in québec prison. The 74-year-old is currently in a medically induced coma. Québec police say doctors have plans in place to wake him to see if you can survive on his own. Pickton was attacked sunday at a maximum-security institution. In 2007 he was convicted of six counts of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

This is what they consider home. >> Reporter: the liberals forced to make the modification after an ontario superior court ruled the law limiting citizenship was unconstitutional. >> It will be the first time the citizenship act is actually charter compliant. >> Reporter: the old rules imposed in 2009 by than conservative government after they spent $94 million repatriating 14,000 canadian citizens during the war in lebanon. Paul mcfarlane returns to junior hockey after spending seven years as an nhl assistant coach with seattle, toronto, and florida. Prior to that he spent three seasons as head coach of the ontario hockey league's kingston frontenacs. Mcfarlane spoke about his excitement getting back into the leadership role and the long-term mission for the club. >> There's different ways teams play at the nhl labour -- level, the western league as well.
