Child dead, 3 injured in Durham highway crash. Driver faces charges.

A three-vehicle crash in Durham on Sunday afternoon left a child dead and three other people injured.

Durham police are investigating the crash that happened around 12:51 p.m. on Interstate 40 near Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard.

Tanner Brace, of Fuquay-Varina, was driving a 2009 Honda Accord west and rear-ended a 2019 Honda Civic the juvenile was in, according to a news release.

The collision caused the Civic to hit a tractor-trailer in the next lane before striking a concrete median barrier, the release stated.

The juvenile, whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and died.

The crash reduced I-40 West to one lane for several hours.

Two others in the Civic were treated for minor injuries, according to police.

Brace, who also suffered minor injuries, was charged with failure to reduce speed and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, police said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation. Police ask anyone with information to call Investigator J. Colquitt at 919-560-4935, ext. 29450 or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
