Italy international Federico Chiesa provided a gracious response when asked about the red-hot form of his Liverpool teammate Luis Diaz, which is currently restricting the former Juventus winger to cameo appearances from the substitute’s bench.

Chiesa made his Premier League debut during Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon. A quickfire brace from Luis Diaz on the 26th and 28th minutes sent Arne Slot’s side on their way to a convincing victory.

The Colombian now has five goals and an assist from his first five games of the Premier League season.

Though Chiesa is now back to match fitness after a summer of individual training at Juventus, he is finding it difficult to break into the Liverpool starting XI due to the form of Luis Diaz, plus competition from the likes of Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nuñez.

Chiesa ‘ready to play’ for Liverpool despite Luis Diaz form

When asked about his teammate’s form in front of goal after full-time on Saturday, Chiesa responded with a smile and a glowing review of the Colombian’s performance and the team’s success so far this campaign.

“He is playing really good but I think all the team has played really good today,” Chiesa told Liverpool’s media channels.

“Everyone has just performed so well and we needed to bounce back from a bad result against Nottingham and today we showed, as I said before, a great performance and Lucho scored a fantastic brace.

“But the team played so well today, everyone had a great game so congratulations to all.”

Chiesa also confirmed that he is ‘ready’ to play and hopes to earn more minutes when Liverpool face West Ham in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

“I am training for that, I’m training harder, faster, I’m training to be ready to play, but this depends on the coach and when he wants me to play and put me in, I just have to be ready and play.”
