Chiefs’ Travis Kelce loses wager with Patrick Mahomes, will pay it off on podcast
Unless you had a rooting interest in Saturday’s epic Texas Tech-Cincinnati game, we all are a little worse off for the Red Raiders pulling off a 44-41 victory.
That’s because if Cincinnati had won the game, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes would have done his weekly news conference on Wednesday wearing the head of the Bearcats mascot.
That wouldn’t have been the result of losing a bet with teammate Travis Kelce.
Kelce played for Cincinnati, while Mahomes was on the Tech football team. After the Chiefs went through their pregame walkthroughs, Kelce and Mahomes got together to watch their favorite teams play.
Before kickoff, Mahomes made an offer that Kelce easily refused.
I left that look back in Cincinnati for good reason

Following the game, Mahomes couldn’t resist the chance to poke fun at his teammate and close friend.

Kelce offered this response, as only a fan whose team had just lost could.
Really thought the bearcats were gonna find a way to win that one at the end… smh https://t.co/bY8X5HedAY

Both players also spent part of Saturday talking with the CBS broadcasters who called the Chiefs-Chargers game. During Sunday’s game, Jim Nantz and Tony Romo revealed that the teammates made a little wager.
“(Kelce) and Mahomes, they have such a friendship and chemistry,” Nantz said. “They came in together to meet with us last night. They were all excited about going back Saturday evening and watching their two alma maters square off, Texas Tech and Cincinnati, which ended up being an unbelievable game, won by Texas Tech 44-41. The Bearcats missed a 50-yard field goal last play the game. Of course, they had a little side wager.”
Tony Romo interjected: “No money, they said. No money.”
Nantz added: “(The bet was) wearing the jersey and the head of the mascot, which now Travis will be wearing something that has something to do with the Texas Tech Red Raiders on his next New Heights podcast with his brother.
“Patrick, had it gone the other way, was gonna have to wear the Bearcat mascot head at the Wednesday press conference, through the duration. So, he’s spared that.”
Let’s hope Kelce will be in Tech’s mascot gear on Wednesday when the latest “New Heights” podcast episode drops.
It would have been fun to see Mahomes in the Cincinnati mascot head. Kelce did something similar last year when Iowa State defeated Cincinnati. Brad Gee, the Chiefs’ vice president of football communications, is an Iowa State graduate and won a fun wager with Kelce.

UPDATE: Kelce wore Tech’s Raider Red mascot head on the podcast Wednesday.
“It’s extremely hot under here,” Kelce said on the podcast. “There’s not a lot of air coming through this thing so it kind of feels like I’m hyperventilating a little bit.”
Kelce wore the head for about five minutes. His brother, Jason, asked Travis what Red Raider might say.
“Come on down to Lubbock, Texas,” Kelce said. “We’ll throw batteries at ya, we’ll throw tortillas at ya. You come down here, you’re gonna get your ass whupped.”
