With Chiefs-Texans looming, here’s the latest news on Jaylen Watson, left tackle shuffle

Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Jaylen Watson (35) runs through drills during practice at training camp on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2024, in St. Joesph.

It’s looking more likely that cornerback Jaylen Watson, who hasn’t played since Week 7 of the NFL season, will be part of the Chiefs’ game-plan for Saturday’s home playoff showdown against the Houston Texans.

The Chiefs play host to the Texans at 3:30 p.m. Central Time on Saturday in an AFC Divisional Round game at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

“He’s worked tremendously hard to get himself to this point,” Andy Reid said of Watson. “We’ll just see how that goes as far as the game reps, but he sure has worked hard to get himself even to this point.”

Reid said that Watson, who is recovering from a fractured fibula, is closer to returning than wide receiver Mecole Hardman. Hardman remains out with a knee injury and has missed the past four games.

Both players are on the injured list and would need to be activated in order to play against Houston.

On the injury report released Thursday. Watson was listed as a full participant and questionable for the game. Hardman was a limited participant and doubtful.

The Chiefs have rotated Joshua Williams and Nazeeh Johnson at cornerback in Watson’s absence. Watson had emerged from a competition with Williams and Johnson — all in their third seasons — to become a starter for the first time. He was off to a solid start, too.

Reid said he hasn’t made a call about who will start Saturday’s game at left tackle. The choice is between D.J. Humphries and Joe Thuney. Humphries has played in two games for the Chiefs, while Thuney, a guard, played three late-season games at left tackle, with Mike Caliendo playing left guard.

Humphries and Thuney have practiced with the starters this week.

“I’ve taken it this far,” Reid said about not naming a starter. “I’m going to get with the coaches and just make sure what they want and where we’re at with that But they’ve both been in there and have done a nice job.”
