Chiefs punter thanks Patrick Mahomes for letting him actually punt during a game

As a quarterback, it’s Patrick Mahomes‘ job to make sure the Kansas City Chiefs score every single time they have the ball. A drive that results in zero points is a failure, but Mahomes hasn’t had too many of those this season.

While that would normally be a good thing for every member of the Chiefs, it makes for a lonely atmosphere for the punter. Dustin Colquitt hasn’t seen the field all that much for the Chiefs in 2018, and it has gotten to the point where he’s actually thanking Mahomes for letting him do his job.

Mahomes was mic’d up for the team’s Week 10 win against the Arizona Cardinals. In the middle of the mic’d up video, Colquitt tells Mahomes, “Thanks for letting me punt. I appreciate it. It felt good to get out there again.” The two then laugh as Colquitt pats Mahomes on the back.

The exchange takes place around 1:24.

The Chiefs seemed determined to keep Colquitt off the field early, scoring points on their first four drives. Colquitt finally punted with just under two minutes remaining in the first half. That seemed to open the floodgates, as Colquitt wound up punting four more times in the second half.

We’re not saying Mahomes intentionally made sure drives stalled out just so Colquitt could get more action, but given how often Mahomes has marched down the field at will against opposing defenses all year, we can’t fully rule it out.
