Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes has ‘tons of’ game balls. These mean the most to him
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes knew almost immediately that he was going to have to spring into action Thursday night.
Rookie receiver Xavier Worthy electrified fans at Arrowhead Stadium with a 21-yard touchdown run against the Ravens, and after reaching the end zone, he dropped the ball.
Mahomes knew instantly the ball would be a keepsake Worthy would want, so he made sure to get the ball and he gave it to the rookie. Mahomes did something similar in Super Bowl LVII with Skyy Moore.
While on his weekly interview on 96.5 The Fan, Mahomes explained Monday why he keeps an eye on where the ball goes after someone scores a touchdown.
“It’s just because it’s such an important moment,” Mahomes said. “Whenever you grow up, man, you want to get in the end zone and score that touchdown. And so a lot of times when you do score the touchdown, the guys are excited, they’re celebrating, and guys kind of go crazy. And so I want to make sure those guys have that moment. And guys have helped me in the past. I got the football from passing Len Dawson’s (career passing yards) record and that’s something you forever will remember.
“You want to have those footballs. And so I kind of make sure to grab those for the guys and the excitement of the moment, they’ll be able to have that memory.”

Mahomes was asked how many game balls he has at home, and if any have special meaning to him.
“I have a ton of them, but I think the ones that mean the most is I kept every football from the games of the first Super Bowl run,” Mahomes said. “And so I have the divisional round comeback, the AFC Championship comeback, and then the first Super Bowl that we won. I have the game ball from all three of those.
“And so I think those are the ones that probably mean the most to me, because it was the first run. It was such a magical run, and kind of started what we’ve kind of done so far.”
