Only the Buffalo Bills stand in their way.
The Chiefs and Bills have a longstanding rivalry. Both have evolved throughout the years with different iterations leading the charge.
Players such as Len Dawson spearheaded the early years while Joe Montana and Jim Kelly jostled in the 1990s. Defensive standouts Bruce Smith and Derrick Thomas were ferocious competitors.
Now, Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen will compete once again.
Here is a look at every Chiefs-Bills postseason matchup ahead of Sunday’s game.
1966 AFL Championship
Prior to the 1970 NFL merger, the Chiefs and Bills renewed their rivalry in the American Football League.
Kansas City was led by Pro Football Hall of Famers Len Dawson, Buck Buchanan, Bobby Bell and Johnny Robinson on the night. The star-studded Chiefs defeated the Bills 31-7 to capture the AFL Championship.
The Chiefs’ victory sent them to Super Bowl I, where they fell 35-10 to the Green Bay Packers at Los Angeles Memorial Stadium.
1991 AFC Divisional Game
The Bills won 37-14 against the Chiefs in 1991. Star quarterback Jim Kelly threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, Thurman Thomas ran for 100 yards to extend his four-game postseason streak with 100 or more rushing yards.
Buffalo went on to play in Super Bowl XXVI against Washington. The Bills lost 37-24 in the second of their four consecutive Super Bowl appearances.
1993 AFC Championship Game
Two years later, the Chiefs and Bills met for a chance to headline the Super Bowl. The Bills continued their early 90s dominance with a 30-13 victory. Thurman Thomas rushed for 186 yards and three touchdowns as Buffalo looked to finally snap its Super Bowl skid.
2020 AFC Championship Game
It took a while before the Chiefs and Bills met again in the playoffs. This time, Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen took center stage during the 2020 season.
Both players were looking to stake their claim as the next great NFL quarterback. Mahomes completed 29 of 38 passes for 325 yards and three touchdowns. Allen matched him with 287 yards and two touchdowns.
However, it was the Chiefs stars who led the way. Travis Kelce had 13 catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns while Frank Clark registered two sacks. It was enough for the Chiefs to win 38-24 and make their second consecutive Super Bowl appearance.
2021 AFC Divisional Game
The Chiefs and Bills wrote a thrilling chapter to their rivalry in 2021. Both teams performed at a high level that required overtime to decide a winner.
The final two minutes of regulation were electric.
The teams combined for 25 points with Josh Allen finding receiver Gabe Davis for a go-ahead touchdown with 13 seconds remaining on the clock. Not to be outdone, Patrick Mahomes drove the Chiefs 44 yards in 10 seconds to allow kicker Harrison Butker to tie the score at 36.
In overtime, the Chiefs got the ball first and drove down the field. Mahomes found Travis Kelce for an 8-yard touchdown as the Chiefs went to their fourth consecutive AFC Championship game.
2023 AFC Divisional Game
Last season, the Chiefs pulled out a 27-24 victory over the Bills. It was the first time that Patrick Mahomes had to win a postseason game on the road.
And he delivered.
Mahomes connected with Travis Kelce for two touchdowns and made timely plays to put the Chiefs in position to score. However, it was Isiah Pacheco who registered 97 rushing yards and the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter.
From there, the Chiefs’ defense held firm as the Bills were shut out in the fourth quarter. The Chiefs improved to 4-2 over the Bills in their postseason rivalry.
