Chiefs’ current streak of comeback wins had never been done in NFL history

Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, left, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes celebrate in the confetti after KC’s Super Bowl LVII defeat of the Philadelphia Eagles at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

After the Chiefs became the first team in NFL history to overcome an overtime deficit and win the Super Bowl, tight end Travis Kelce summed up his belief in quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

“I guess at this point, I take it for granted, but I know we’re in every single game I’ve ever played in with him,” Kelce said following the Chiefs’ 25-22 win over the 49ers in February. “No matter what the score is, no matter how much time is left, that guy’s got magic in his right arm, man.”

The Chiefs’ ability to rally from a deficit was on display Monday when the Buccaneers took a lead into the fourth quarter at Arrowhead Stadium but lost in overtime.

Opta Stats noted that was the eighth straight time the Chiefs had won after trailing in the second half of a game. How often has that happened in NFL history? Well, the Chiefs are the first team to do it.

“No other team in NFL history has won 8 straight games in which they trailed in the second half (reg & post),“ Opta wrote on X.

Here’s a look at those comeback victories.

On the latest episode of the New Heights podcast, Kelce talked about the Chiefs’ ability to win Monday’s game.

“At the end of the day, man, the Chiefs just finding a way to win ball games, baby,” he said. “The offense, we put together a great drive there in OT that we could really hang our hat on in terms of the game, and then move forward and feel like we finished the game the right way. And in a lot of that goes to coach (Andy) Reid and a lot of that goes to Pat Mahomes playing his ass off. And a lot of that goes to the offensive line for moving the ball, man.”
