Chiefs add explosive receiver by taking Xavier Worthy in first round of NFL draft

Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy told USA TODAY Sports his phone was buzzing after he broke the 40-yard dash record at the NFL scouting combine. The Kansas City Chiefs buzzed Worthy’s phone Thursday night.

The Chiefs traded up to No. 28 overall to select Worthy on Thursday in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft.

Worthy turned heads after the speedy wideout broke John Ross’ combine 40-yard dash record with a 4.21-second mark on his second attempt.

“I definitely knew I had a chance,” Worthy said to USA TODAY Sports after he broke the 40 record. “I didn’t know it was gonna happen in reality. I came in knowing I was gonna run nothing slower than 4.25…When I ran a 4.25 on my first one, I knew I was gonna break it. Because when I was training, I always ran faster on my second 40. So I knew I was gonna run faster on that second 40.”

A former track standout, Worthy ran a wind-legal personal-best time of 10.65 seconds in the 100-meters at Central East High School in Fresno, California.

The wideout started 39 games in three years with the Longhorns. He produced 26 career touchdown receptions, placing him third in Texas history. His 2,755 receiving yards ranks fourth all-time in school history.

The defending-champion Chiefs are getting an explosive wide receiver who can separate from coverage and be a legitimate vertical threat. He’s also confident that he’s now the fastest player in the NFL.

“I feel like I bring an explosive dynamic to the offense and a good vibe to the team,” Worthy said at the NFL combine.
