The Chiefs achieved three historical NFL rarities with their win over the Bills
This epic Chiefs-Bills rivalry produced another amazing chapter with Sunday’s AFC Championship Game on Sunday.
The Chiefs beat the Bills 32-29 at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in a game that featured four lead changes and yet another Harrison Butker field goal that won it.
While the Chiefs’ goal is to be the first team ever to win three straight Super Bowl championships, they made NFL history in three ways by beating the Bills.
1. Six-year greatness
The Chiefs are the first team in the Super Bowl era to make it to the title game five times in a six-season span.
One other team made the championship five times in six seasons: the New York Giants. They did it from 1958-59 and 1961-63. New York, however, lost each time they advanced to the championship game.
2. Two-time excellence
The Chiefs will be just the fourth team to make a third straight Super Bowl appearance. The Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII and LVIII and will be going for a three-peat in Super Bowl LIX.
The Chiefs are the first team in NFL history to advance to the Super Bowl after winning back-to-back titles. The 1992-93 Cowboys, the 1988-89 49ers and 1974-75 Steelers all got to a conference championship game before losing and having their three-peat hopes end.
3. Mahomes-Allen rivalry
Patrick Mahomes became the first quarterback in NFL history to beat another quarterback four times in the postseason. In addition to Sunday’s win, the Chiefs defeated Buffalo 27-24 in last season’s AFC Divisional round playoff game.
In the 2021 season, the Chiefs rallied to beat the Bills 42-36 in overtime in the classic “13 second” game. And the Chiefs downed Buffalo 42-36 in the 2020 AFC Championship Game.
