Chicago Bears Stock Exchange: Who's up, who's down entering Week 4?

Week 3 was a rough one for the Chicago Bears, who wound up dropping a very winnable game to the Indianapolis Colts. The Bears lost 21-16 despite outgaining the Colts in total yards and dominating the time of possession. Three turnovers were the biggest difference, though, as Indy was able to score 14 of their 21 points off those takeaways. Chicago was also very uneven with their offensive production, failing to establish the ground game for the third week in a row.

This game featured plenty of standout performances, both positive and negative. Here are the players whose stock is rising and those who are falling in this week's edition of the Chicago Bears Stock Exchange.

Falling: RB D'Andre Swift

Indianapolis Colts safety Julian Blackmon (32) brings down Chicago Bears running back D'Andre Swift (4) on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2024, during a game against the Chicago Bears at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

D'Andre Swift's stock was already very low, but when he can't even have anything close to a bounce-back performance against arguably the league's worst run defense, it sunk much lower. The running back's nightmare season continued as he totaled just 20 yards on 13 carries, getting bottled up essentially every time he touches the ball. His most infamous moment came on fourth and inches, when he lost 10 yards on a speed run play, though he had plenty of other poor plays where his vision was severely lacking.

There are too many alarming stats to indicate just how bad Swift has been. You can look at his yards per carry (1.8), his rushing first downs (one), the fact that 20 of his 68 rushing yards on the season came on one play, etc. No matter how you slice it, he has been the most disappointing player of the year up to this point.

Rising: RB Roschon Johnson

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Jaylon Carlies (57) tackles Chicago Bears running back Roschon Johnson (23) on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2024, during a game against the Chicago Bears at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

It took three weeks for Roschon Johnson to enter the running back rotation, and he made the most of his opportunity. Johnson was far and away the best runner on the field for the Bears, carrying the ball eight times for 30 yards while adding four catches for 32 yards.

Though much of his work came while the Colts were playing prevent defense, Johnson showed solid vision and a good burst to keep the chains moving. The offense simply moved the ball more effectively while he was on the field. Johnson deserves more snaps in Week 4, and if offensive coordinator Shane Waldron is smart, he will out carry Swift as the lead back. Buy stock in Johnson now because there's a good chance he's going to be an important player in the coming weeks.

Falling: TE Marcedes Lewis

Has father time finally caught up to Marcedes Lewis? The ageless wonder has been an elite blocking tight end for the better part of a decade, even into his late 30s. Now playing in his 19th year, though, Lewis doesn't look like the same player.

The man nicknamed "Big Dog" is missing blocks and committing penalties at an alarming rate. He had one of the lowest PFF grades in Week 3, something that rarely happens with him. His primary job is to serve as a blocking tight end, and if he's allowing defenders to get past him, that's a problem. Perhaps he's still learning Waldron's offense, but Lewis' play is concerning. The Bears might think so too, seeing as they elevated tight end Stephen Carlson to the active roster on Tuesday.

Rising: WR Rome Odunze

From the oldest player on the team to the youngest, it seems as if wide receiver Rome Odunze is finally hitting his stride. The No. 9 overall pick from the 2024 NFL Draft was sensational in Week 3, leading the Bears with six catches for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Odunze and quarterback Caleb Williams are making excellent progress, and you can see the chemistry forming right before our eyes. The two connected on multiple deep balls, something that plagued Williams during the first couple weeks. Odunze is the first Bears rookie wide receiver to eclipse 100 receiving yards in a game in six years, and it's only Week 3. Don't be surprised if he's the team's No. 1 option sooner rather than later, with DJ Moore serving as WR2 if this kind of production keeps up.

Falling: LB TJ Edwards

So much for TJ Edwards' hot start to the season. Edwards had his worst game of the season in Week 3, totaling just two tackles with one solo tackle. For someone who can play the run as well as he can, the veteran linebacker was a nonfactor against Jonathan Taylor and the Colts. The Bears defense couldn't contain Taylor late in the game, and Edwards failed to step up to the challenge. His PFF grade of 29.9 was the worst on the team.

This simply could just be an outlier, as Edwards has had bad games in the past. Still, it's never good to see a weakside linebacker total just two tackles in a game when the rushing attack was so prevalent.

Rising: LB Tremaine Edmunds

Though Edwards didn't have a standout game, his linebacker teammate Tremaine Edmunds certainly did. Edmunds was arguably the star of the defense on Sunday, totaling five tackles, one QB hit, two pass breakups, and an interception that saved a touchdown. He was also helped make a key stop on a fourth down run by Taylor to turn the ball over on downs.

It's only three games, but Edmunds is showing why the Bears paid him $72 million last offseason to come over from Buffalo. His 69.5 PFF season grade is the second highest of his career up to this point, and his pass defense has been strong. Edmunds is allowing an opposing passer rating of just 36.6, giving up six air yards on six completions. The Bears middle linebacker is playing excellent football right now.
