This announcement comes months ahead of when it was expected, with the governing conservative party support dwindling after 14 years in power. The international community is turning up the heat on israel as ireland, norway and spain have now joined more than 140 other countries in officially recognizing a palestinian state. Now, this move comes as disturbing. Newly released footage taken on october 7th shows hamas militants kidnaping female israeli soldiers. Brie jackson has the latest from washington, but first, a warning some of the details are disturbing. >> Disturbing newly released video from october 7th shows seven female soldiers captured by hamas terrorists. Some of their faces bloodied and their hands bound. Loved ones reacted to the chilling video with an urgent plea for the hostages to come home. >> I am begging for people to do something, you know, just just get them out of there. >> The hostage family's form made the video public to push for the hostages release a demand echoed by protesters gathered in israel who say the government must do more. >> We've got to do everything. Doing everything to bring them home all the hostages. And because they're suffering, they're if they're still alive in what they call an effort to bring peace to the region. >> Ireland, norway and spain agreed to formally recognize an independent palestinian state. >> We do so because we believe in freedom and justice as the fundamental principles of international law. >> The landmark move drew praise

In washington, brie jackson, nbc news telecom and media firm québécor is calling on the federal government to stop a deal between supermarket giant loblaw and a retailer co-owned by rogers and bell, saying it will lock out competition and, quote, hold consumers hostage. >> Québecor says it is deeply concerned about loblaw's desire to drive us out of the mobile shop, and the concern should be shared by canadian consumers, who will see wireless competition weakened by this highly subjective decision. Québecor says the move will effectively shut its freedom mobile brand out of its 180 stores across canada. Industry minister francois-philippe champagne says the move is a matter for the competition bureau. >> In terms of due process, you need to get the authorities involvement so that they can look at that, assess the merit and then decide on further course of action. >> Prime minister trudeau says the loblaws deal is being looked at to see if it needs to be referred to. Canada's competition bureau. Well, warm, sunny days are on the way and this is reason for many people to head outside and enjoy it. Of course. But during skin cancer awareness month, advocates are urging you to enjoy the sun safely. Morgan black has more. >> From hiking to biking, rob stauffer spent many days enjoying the outdoors and along the way got a few burns too. >> Somewhere in that process, I ended up with radiation from the sun. Stauffer is a two time melanoma survivor, first found in his right ear in 2015, later moving to his brain and lungs. >> The fact that it had gone through most likely through my bloodstream to my brain, you realize that your chances for survival are, small, he recovered and became an advocate, connecting with save your skin foundation, a not for profit dedicated to sun safety education. >> Kathy bernard created it in 2006 after a trial treatment in alberta saved her life. >> I am so unbelievably lucky and I would not be in front of you if it was not for the cross cancer institute in edmonton, alberta. >> Ever since, she's been reminding people of the essentials sunscreen, sunglasses and a newfound appreciation for some shade, you can still be outside enjoying the nice weather. >> You just have to be careful. >> The incidence rate of melanoma has gone up over the past 25 years. In 2023, about 9700 canadians were diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer. That's an increase of 11.5% from 2022. >> You know, 90% of skin cancer comes from uv exposure. We know that it's a fact. It always has been. >> Stauffer says he's committed to teaching others how to enjoy the warm weather safely. >> Well, the critical part is, what? The sun, the impact that it can be that there are there are preventive measures. You can enjoy the outdoors. You just have to be aware of those. >> Morgan black "global news" >> The calgary humane society has found a home for one special surrendered pet. This is slippy the turtle. He arrived at the humane society last september. Turns out he's a map turtle, which is a controlled species in alberta and can't be kept as a pet. And as we take a look at the upper level pattern across the country, it's pretty similar to how it's been all week. We'll get into eastern sections of the country in a moment, but wanted to point out more unsettled conditions at times across the west, including some heavy rain, even some wet snow across portions of manitoba and northwestern ontario. We've had this big ridge in the east. Yes, it's been warm. It's been humid. It's almost like you just flicked a switch and summer arrive very quickly. What we're going to get into less humid conditions after the passage of a cold front. And you can see it right there. It did bring some stronger storms across portions of southern ontario yesterday, and we do still do have some residual showers around southwestern quebec should stay mainly dry around nova scotia today. The. But there is the chance of some showers and some thunderstorms. We'll have to watch out for those today around new brunswick, but as we take a look at the longer range forecast, I thought I'd take you forward into the weekend. We're looking at some dry conditions for the most part through montreal, through fredericton and halifax. As I mentioned, not quite as warm as it has been for southern ontario. The chance of a shower or thunderstorm saturday afternoon and then that should clear. Sunday should be dry and then late sunday the chance of a few scattered showers pushing across the maritimes. But overall looking like a decent weekend. Of course, we do need the rain and there is some rain on the way. More unsettled weather conditions through eastern sections of the country into early next week. Speaking of rain, yes, it has been wet. It's been unsettled at times and that pattern continuing through the day today for portions of the west or at least farther east towards portions of the prairies. Special air quality statements still in place for northern sections of B.C. due to smoke from wildfires. And you can see that popcorn effect here. The convection going on around portions of alberta because of the upper level low. Still, some instability, but some steadier rain through southern manitoba. Even some wet snow. This is going to be a cool rain with temperatures only in the single digits or near that over the next little bit. Okay so we're getting up to 18 in vancouver that is closer to average, 21 in kelowna. So we'll see some sunshine as well. Should stay dry. And 11 in calgary with the risk of some showers. Some thunderstorms still cooler than average. Same situation as you head through saskatchewan and manitoba. Temperatures still mild, above average in places like toronto
