And for many canadians, that means travelling either within our country's borders or abroad. But affordability, or lack thereof, is, of course, a major factor in determining how now we are going to travel, if at all. Polling firm ipsos examined where canadians are when it comes to that. Plus how they feel about another summer staple. At least every four years. We're talking about the summer olympics held in paris in a couple of months. All right, let's break down the numbers. Shaun simpson from ipsos joins us now. Shawn, always great to see you. So let's talk about summer travel. As the temperature goes up you're taking the temperature of a lot of people to see if they can travel if they want to, because there's a difference, isn't there, between desire and ability. Break that down for us. >> Yeah. There is a growing proportion of canadians. >> A strong majority say that they need a vacation this summer. You know, we've been through a lot of polly crisis challenges on affordability, challenges, feeding your own family. And so 8 in 10 need a break from it all. They say they need to travel. That's up nine points over the previous year. And as a result, the proportion who say they're likely to travel is also up four points to 62. Now there's a gap there, of course, meaning that some people who say that they need to travel this summer really want to travel this summer, aren't going to be able to do that. And the key reason is affordability concerns. Even those who will travel are saying that they're likely to scale back their plans this year because they simply can't afford to pay what people are asking. >> So how does that break down by demographics? Because the younger generation, perhaps not always known being flush with cash. Still, it seems based on some of the numbers, they still are going to go no matter what. >> Well, they may not be flush with cash, but they still know how to spend it. So yeah, the younger generations are more likely to say that they're going to take a vacation this year. And in fact, more likely to say that they're going to splurge on a vacation this year compared to those age 35 to 50 4 or 55, plus the other demographic that is leading in vacation intentions is quebecers. By far the most likely in canada to say that they will take a vacation this year, but also the most likely to say that they're scaling them back. So more people travelling? Maybe just not as far, maybe not as long, or maybe not as opulently. >> Interesting. All right. So let's talk about another summer thing of course. And if one is lucky enough, they can actually travel to the summer olympics. I mean, that is a stretch for a lot of people, especially when it comes to stretching their wallets. But how do canadians feel right now about the summer olympics, especially compared to the previous ones? >> Yeah, well, nearly 6 in 10 say that they're interested in following the paris summer games this year, and it's remarkably interest is up by almost double compared to the games that were recently held in beijing and tokyo. So there's been a renewed interest in the olympic games this year. I don't know if the location is part of it, but again, I think it's a response to this poly crisis and all the challenges that the world has been facing. We've got climate change, we've got affordability issues. We've got, you know, war in the middle east, war in ukraine. And this may just be the tonic or the antidote that the world needs something to look forward to, something that will bring us together for the love of sport and country. >> It's interesting that you're looking at the time to, you know, 2020. Well, actually, the summer olympics, which were supposed to happen in 2020, happened in 21 in tokyo. And you wonder how much of a factor the covid pandemic had on all that on the one hand, you would think that it would be a good respite for a lot of people, a good distraction, but nonetheless, it's indicating the numbers indicate this year there's actually a higher interest compared to that time. >> Yeah, I think in 2021, people were still very much focused on their own health, on covid, the games were being modified. Maybe the stands weren't going to be as full at all, just kind of seemed quite tentative. And, and
