Chelsea set to make unpopular decision having sealed €15m deal for first January signing
Chelsea are set recall Caleb Wiley from his loan spell at Strasbourg in order to free up space to send Mamdou Sarr back to the Ligue 1 outfit.
The Blues haven’t been particularly active in the January transfer window, but they are now set to complete their first deal of the window.
Chelsea have agreed a deal worth up to a reported €15m for 19-year-old Sarr, with the centre back set to spend the remainder of the season back on loan in France.
Wiley set to be recalled to accomodate Sarr
Chelsea have been looking to strengthen at centre back this month given injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile.
Aaron Anselmino was recalled from his loan spell at Boca Juniors, whilst the Blues also recalled Trevoh Chalobah from Crystal Palace, and the 25-year-old could be in line to start against Wolves on Monday.
Chelsea had explored a move for Marc Guehi , whilst they were said to have a move for an unnamed centre back lined up, which has now transpired to be Sarr.
The teenager joined Strasbourg last summer from Lyon and has made 14 appearances in all competitions for the French side this season.
Given Sarr’s lack of experience it makes sense for him to continue his development in France, but for that to happen the Blues need to recall on of their three loanees already at Strasbourg.
Chelsea fans would love Andrey Santos back, but that looks unlikely to happen and L’Equipe have reported the Blues are set recall American fullback Wiley.
Wiley signed for Chelsea last summer from MLS side Atlanta and was sent on loan to Strasbourg for the season, where he’s made six Ligue 1 appearances.

The 20-year-old is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury and has missed the last six games so it makes the decision for Chelsea very straight forward.
Wiley will likely continue his rehab at Cobham, but whether he makes any appearances for the first team over the second half of the season remains to be seen.
