Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has revealed that some of his squad are considering going on strike in protest against the current football schedule.

The work load on professional footballers has been a prominent topic in recent weeks, following expansions to the club football calendar. UEFA have implemented an increased 36-team Champions League for the 2024/25 season, while the Europa League and Conference League will also have a new initial league phase format.

Additionally next summer, Chelsea will compete in FIFA’s newly-expanded Club World Cup tournament. It will be the first under an expanded format with 32 teams, including the winners of the four previous continental championships.

With international tournaments also prominent on the calendar, it has been suggested that players could strike in a bid to force change.

Speaking ahead of his side’s trip to face West Ham in the Premier League this weekend, Maresca said there have been conversations regarding a strike at Chelsea.

“For me, it’s completely wrong with the amount of games that we have. But the only ones that can do something are the players and we can help them. In the last two weeks some of the players have tried to explain what they think and I think it’s a good starting point. Some of them have said that [going on strike] could be an idea for them.”

Reece James return ‘delayed’

One player who could benefit from a reduced schedule is Reece James. The Chelsea captain has been hampered by injuries in recent months and Maresca confirmed there has been no timeframe placed on his return.

“We’re waiting that he’s fit. His injury’s a bit delayed but the most important thing for him and any injury is that they come back when they’re 100% fit, so Reece is still out.

“We don’t have an idea at the moment [when he’ll be back]. We hope we can find the right solution and have him back as soon as possible.”
