Chelsea have issued a statement condemning a video shared by midfielder Enzo Fernandez that included a ”racist and discriminatory’ chant aimed at the France national team.

The French Football Federation have filed a complaint to FIFA over the video, which showed the Argentina squad singing a chant about France’s players.

Fernandez’s Chelsea teammate Wesley Fofana, who has one cap for France, posted an image of the video on Instagram and labelled it “uninhibited racism”.

Fernandez apologised for the post and said he is ‘truly sorry’ for the ‘highly offence language’ in the chant, insisting the video does not reflect his ‘beliefs or character’.

Chelsea have now issued a statement confirming an internal disciplinary procedure against Fernandez.

“Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour completely unacceptable. We are proud to be a diverse, inclusive club where people from all cultures, communities and identities feel welcome.” the statement read.

“We acknowledge and appreciate our player’s public apology and will use this as an opportunity to educate. The Club has instigated an internal disciplinary procedure.”
