Chelsea find out fate of Marc Guehi pursuit following Chalobah recall – report
Chelsea’s pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi hangs in the balance following Trevoh Chalobah’s recall to Stamford Bridge, according to the Daily Mail.
The decision to bring Chalobah back comes after Chelsea activated a recall clause in response to Wesley Fofana’s injury. They have also put Axel Disasi up for sale.
Chelsea sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley have come under fire for poor squad planning.
Chalobah always looked better than Disasi and was more durable than Fofana, but they spent last summer trying to pawn him off. Six months later, they recall him to fill the gap they failed to address.
The move to recall the England youth international could also spell danger for their pursuit of Guehi.
Palace are reportedly not planning to seek a replacement during the transfer window. They will hold on even tighter if the Blues approach them for the centre-back.
Discussions between the two clubs regarding a potential move for the England international have taken place, but Chalobah’s recall has cast doubt on whether Chelsea will press ahead with negotiations this month.
Palace have Maxence Lacroix, Chadi Riad, and Chris Richards. They appear content with their squad.
Per the report, losing Guehi mid-season is not an option they are seriously considering, further dampening Chelsea’s hopes of securing the 23-year-old’s return.
Chelsea remain keen on Guehi, and insiders suggest that a deal is still possible. However, as things stand, Palace’s reluctance to enter the market for a Chalobah replacement significantly diminishes the likelihood of a January transfer.
Barring an unforeseen twist, Guehi is expected to remain at Selhurst Park until the end of the season.
Chelsea need to consider the atrocious job the sporting directors have done. They have botched over £1 billion. They still need to fill critical squad holes that should have been addressed ages ago.
They entered the summer transfer window needing an assured goalkeeper, a commanding defender, and a clinical centre-forward. They still need all those profiles despite spending north of £200 million.
