Chelsea face Premier League competition for Tel signing
Chelsea face competition from rival Premier League clubs in the race to sign Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich.
Tel has made a u-turn on his decision to leave Bayern Munich this month and is exploring his options before the deadline. The 19-year-old has struggled for regular first-team football this season and has started just twice in the Bundesliga.

Though the Frenchman remains keen to succeed at Bayern Munich, he has opened the door to a potential exit this month. Chelsea have been tracking the forward’s situation throughout the transfer window and are expected to formalise their interest with an approach. Bayern are keen to sign Christopher Nkunku from Chelsea and a swap deal between the clubs could yet be proposed.
However, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that it is an ‘open race’ to sign Tel. Chelsea are not the only Premier League club interested with several English clubs having made contact to discuss a deal.
The focus for Tel will be securing a regular role with his progress having stalled. Last season, he enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with seven goals and five assists in the Bundesliga despite limited involvement. He averaged a Bundesliga goal or assist every 86 minutes during the 2023/24 campaign.
Everton, West Ham, Bournemouth, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are among the Premier League sides assessing centre-forward options this month. The deadline for Premier League clubs to make signings is Monday February 3rd, at 11pm GMT.
