Charlton Athletic made it two wins out of two in this season’s Barclays Women’s Championship after recording a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane this evening.

Ellie Brazil’s second half strike was enough to separate the two sides in South Yorkshire.

The first half was keenly-contested, although neither goalkeeper had much to do. Charlton Athletic keeper Jess Gray spilt a low cross midway through the half but gathered the ball at the second attempt while at the other end, Sian Rogers dropped a cross but Gracie Pearse’s resulting effort was blocked.

It was Sheffield United that looked the more dangerous early in the second half with Ellen Molloy registering two efforts on goal.

Charlton Athletic needed to find more in the final third and their first quality attacking move produced a goal. Carla Humphrey played the ball to Brazil and she sent her shot low into the far corner of the Sheffield United net.

After breaking the deadlock, The Addicks pushed hard for a second goal. Kayleigh Barton went close twice in quick succession before Kiera Skeels saw an effort cleared off the line. Substitute Karin Muya then found the ball at her feet in the six yard box three minutes from time but she somehow fired wide. Muya got another chance to score in second half injury time but her effort was pushed behind by Rogers.

In the end, one goal separated the two sides as Charlton Athletic continued their winning start to the new season.

Both sides are back in action next weekend. Sheffield United travel to Newcastle United while Charlton Athletic play host to Durham.
