Charlotte Hornets acquiring Josh Green in multi-team deal involving Klay Thompson

Josh Green will be making his way to Charlotte, thanks in part to Klay Thompson.

The Hornets are acquiring Green from Dallas in exchange for two second-round draft picks as part of a multi-team deal sending Thompson from Golden State to the Mavericks, league sources confirmed to The Observer on Monday. Charlotte has the financial means to take Green’s salary directly into its cap following the start of the new league year on Sunday.

Green, 23, inked a three-year, $41 million rookie contract extension in October that kicks in this upcoming season. He appeared in 57 games for the Mavericks in 2023-24, making 33 starts . The 6-foot-5, 200-pounder averaged 8.2 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists this past season for the Mavericks, and.can play either shooting guard or small forward, providing the Hornets with some more positional versatility.

Trading for Green represents the first move the Hornets made since free agency officially began, and it’s the second deal made by Jeff Peterson, Charlotte’s vice president of basketball operations in five days. Peterson picked up three unprotected second-round selections for taking Reggie Jackson’s $5.2 million contract from Denver.

But Charlotte’s biggest task remains solving Miles Bridges’ future with the organization and there still is little clarity surrounding the situation, although many of the teams with salary cap space no longer have the financial parameters necessary to give him a lucrative contract.
