The Chapecoense soccer club, already reeling from the horrific plane crash that claimed most of the members of its team, has been dealt another insulting blow.

According to the Mirror UK, the Brazilian team has been fined roughly $40,000 (Can.) along with opponent Atletico Mineiro for missing the final game of the season.

Chapecoense had 19 players perish in a plane crash that killed 71 people on Nov. 28. The plane was carrying players, staff and journalists when it went down near Medellin, Colombia. The team was en route to play the Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico Nacional.

The plane crash has also devastated the team’s home city of Chapeco, Brazil. The entire community has been in mourning since the tragedy occurred.

From the Mirror UK:

The final round of the Brazilian championship was on December 1, but it was agreed the match against Mineiro would not be played as a result of the tragedy.

Their opponents had also booked their place in the first phase of the Copa Libertadores, so a 3-0 reverse was recorded for both clubs.

However, the Superior Court of Justice has decided to punish both clubs for failing to fulfil the fixture.

Six people survived the crash including three players – Alan Ruschel, Helio Hermito Zampier Neto, and Jackson Ragnar Follmann. According to the report in the Mirror UK, Neto – who was recently taken off life support – has not been told about the crash because doctors fear the shock would hamper his recovery.
