Manchester City could finally be moving closer towards arranging the immediate future of highly-rated Academy midfielder Alex Robertson this summer.

The box-to-box midfielder first signed for City as an Under-15, before progressing through the club’s youth divisions right through to the Elite Development Squad, having signed his first professional contract in the game in the summer of 2020.

The first-half of the 2021/22 season saw Robertson take his first steps into senior men’s football, spending six months on loan in the Scottish Premier League with Ross County, before returning to Manchester City’s EDS for the second-half of the campaign.

Portsmouth then became Alex Robertson’s home for the recently-concluded 2023/24 season on a season-long agreement, with the south coast club holding hopes of retaining the player for another campaign as they make the leap into England’s second division.

However, strong competition has faced Pompey and it now looks increasingly unlikely that Robertson will return to Fratton Park for their first season in the Championship since the 2011/12 campaign.

According to the information of Wales Online’s Glenn Williams, fellow Championship side Cardiff City are now ‘growing optimistic’ over the signing of Manchester City Academy midfielder Alex Robertson this summer.

Speaking earlier this week, Cardiff manager Erol Bulut was keen to issue praise on the Australian international, admitting, “He is an interesting player. He is a quality, good player it is normal he has offers so we shall see.”

Among the other clubs to have been interested in the player at different moments this summer are Portsmouth and Hull City; both of whom have significant aspirations of success during the upcoming campaign.

Despite still making waves in the senior men’s game at club level, Robertson’s talents have already been recognised at senior level, having received his first senior international call-up in March 2023 with Australia for a two-part friendly against Ecuador.

Having represented Australia as an under-15, Robertson spent a number of years playing with England’s youth set-up, starring at under-16, under-17, and under-18, before committing his allegiances to Australia from under-19 level through to their senior squad.
