Opening night saw Newcastle’ return to Europe’s top table and pick up a point away to AC Milan, before Barcelona eased past Antwerp and holders Manchester City were forced to come from behind on their way to beating Red Star Belgrade.
Paris Saint-Germain were too good for Borussia Dortmund at the Parc des Princes, while Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel scored a remarkable equaliser with the final kick of the game against Atletico Madrid.
