Ctv's pat foran has more. >> Reporter: in a country with long winters, the summer vacation is a staple for many canadian families. And this year is survey did by did deloitte found that 74% plan to stay in canada close to their home region. 65% are planning a summer road trip. >> Canadians are intending to spend a bit more this year. They're still price sensitive, but they do intend to get out there and spend money. >> Reporter: a familiar theme is the great outdoors, with many hoping to take in nature and local attractions. Canadians will spend just over $2400 but that's just for lodging and transportation. 35% won't be traveling at all because they can't afford it. >> Definitely, there's a percentage of canadians that are not planning on travelling in a major way this year. >> Reporter: another survey by kayak a travel search engine found two of the top domestic destinations this summer will be calgary and edmonton. The website also says for canadians who want to stretch their dollar outside of the country, searches for south and central america have increased by more than 30%. >> In the summer, seeing south and central america travel prices down by 12 and 13% each, so it's definitely a place where you can go to get more value for your dollar. >> Reporter: kayak says while europe is still a favourite for canadians, prices have increased over last year. Some tourists are bypassing the favourite cities of london and paris to visit more affordable destinations. >> Currently we're seeing rome, lisbon and athens as well as amsterdam as top destinations. >> Reporter: according to the website, anyone planning a vacation should lock in their trips soon. Prices are considered low right now but will continue to rise until the end of june. You'll usually pay a premium for trips booked in july and august. Pat foran, ctv news. >> Michelle: canada is notorious for very high priced plane tickets, a lot of geography and a smaller population doesn't help the matter. >> Nathan: but the airlines themselves are often credit sided ascriticized.now westjet is calling on the federal government to reduce the fees. >> Reporter: the high cost of flying in canada isn't sitting well with passengers. >> Insane, it's insane. >> Reporter: west jett is announcing future plans to add more seats in the back of some of its bigger means. >> Wee currently have 174 seats so we'll take this to 180. I actually have the space that you can take a little bit like room away and you know, compensate it with some seats and still add another row. >> I'm a big guy so anything about smaller seats is not very appealing to me. >> For me, like wouldn't be much of a problem. >> Reporter: but westjet claims more seats means cheaper air fare. >> You want a cheaper flight, it comes at a sacrifice of some comfort. >> Reporter: the airline's strategy is just one of the measures to address high airline tickets. The company is also asking the federal government to review the current way airport maintenance and projects are paid for, which is by the passengers through fees which are then tacked onto air fares. Westjet wants a freeze to the fees until the review is complete. >> The fees that are not just paying the infrastructure but they're also funding the federal budget. >> Reporter: while this aviation budget believes the user pay model should be overhauled. >> Somebody's got to pay for the airports. Somebody's got to pay for the runways.

Westjet says there are many options but doesn't have concrete ideas yet but says it has to work for canadians. That's a practice previously limited to so-called ultralow cost carriers like flare airlines. Westjet's ceo told an audience in calgary wednesday the goal will be to appeal to budget-conscious travellers while freeing up limited overhead bin space. >> Nathan: as more companies incorporate artificial intelligence into their products, tiktok is hoping new a-i offerings will attract more advertisers. The social media giant unveiled what it's calling tiktok symphony. It promises to enable marketers to write scripts and produce videos and other materials through the app itself. An engineer at the social media site confirmed reports it will soon no longer be possible to see that a specific user liked a specific post. Only the author of the post will get that information while others will just see the total number of likes.
