CFRN - Thursday, May 23, 2024 - 07:30 a.m. (ET) - Segment #2

september 1st is coming up so quickly. We have been working on this for a few years now. When we got the answer last week, it was quite emotional. Tears were coming down because I believe so much in this. For me, this is really the future. We are in this decade of indigenous languages right now and there are so many things happening. We are claiming our culture ask identity. And we are claiming our languages. I think that indigenous media, we play a very important role in promoting and preserving indigenous languages. >> Kelsey: how do you see as we go toward the future with the united nations declaring 2022 to 2032 as that decade of international languages. How do you see that role that aptn will play in preserving and passing on these languages >> We want people to hear the beauty of those languages. When you lose a language, you lose a big part of your identity. Your language, they hold your culture. They hold your traditions. They hold your songs and they hold your dance and your roots. By reclaiming these languages. Having more programming in those languages, it helps to revitalize and also there's many languages in canada that are very fragile. I know a bit of the language. I am trying to learn it. It's quite hard. But as you get other people to learn the language and make television shows, hopefully people are going to come and listen to those shows and will be able to learn the language through those programs. >> We have talked so much over the last 8 years of the show about the importance of representation. How much that means to people watching. The impact that has for kids to be able to look at the tv screen and see themselves represented. What are you hearing from your viewers about what indigenous programming on a national network like this will mean to them? >> I have to do a quick story. In 1999 when aptn went to the crtc asking for a channel, there was a quote and somebody said there were more aliens on tv than there were indigenous people. Thank god, things have changed. Since having the first english broadcaster in canada had a great impact on the media landscape. When aptn started, there were a handful of producers. Now there are hundreds working in a thriving production community. Getting our stories out there. Not only to atpn, but different networks. I think that brings a change. When you get to hear storys from other people, from other cultures, you get to understand better who they are. I think that is the best moment when you have that understanding and appreciation. I think that is where stereotypes and myths fall away. We have a great impact and by having the crtc say yes to this indigenous language, it shows that they are really supporting and respecting the updating broadcasting where you have english languages at the same level as french and english in the media landscape. >> What kind of programming can people in canada look forward to this september? >> The same programming we have on aptn. We have our news and current affairs in french and english. Basically on the english language feed will be the same of and more of. That's what we want to do is more indigenous language programming. >> Kelsey: thank you so much for coming on the show today. Good luck with this brand-new adventure. >> Thank you so much for having me. >> Kelsey: just ahead on the show, 10 centimetres of snow is ahead in the why pay for four hotel rooms tostay apart, when you could get one Airbnb and stay together? I Like It - Cardi b, Bad Bunny, j Balvin "Thousands of Canadians like Glenn test our products for quality Over and over and over again." So, you know they're built to last. ( ) Only the best earn the badge. ( ) Tide is busting Laundry's biggest myth... that cold water can't clean. Cold water, on those stains?

Cold water can't clean tough stains? I'd say that Myth is Busted. Turn to cold, with Tide. Alberta's students are special to us teachers. We work hard to provide a supportive environment because nothing is more rewarding than watching students grow and discover. But because Alberta spends the least amount of money per student in all of Canada, our classrooms are deteriorating. The results are larger class sizes, eroding supports, and too many kids struggling. Which has pushed many of our colleagues to leave teaching. It's time for solutions. Stop the excuses. She'll never bend the knee. The greens are coming for you, Rhaenyra, and for your children. (Dramatic music) Otto: It is your great privilege to witness this, a new day for our realm! (Cheering) (Roar) Rhaenyra: We don't choose our destiny. It chooses us. You see what I see. It's just so bold and exciting. Everybody wants to talk about it. A new episode of grey's anatomy on ctv. >> Kelsey: it is a very mild start to the morning for some communities. Montréal, it is 21°. 16 for toronto. In some spots that have been hot and sticky through this week, it's not necessarily as sticky. Mild in temperature. The humidity has reduced. That is due to the cold front that is slowly moving its way through québec and heading to atlantic canada. A big difference of temperatures across the atlantic provinces. We have 15 in fredericton and 17 for halifax. 13 in charlottetown. 3 in St. John's. It will be a cooler day across newfoundland and labrador. Similar temperatures in labrador city compared to thunder bay. 5s in winnipeg and regina. 6 for edmonton. 10 in vancouver. 0 in prince george. Northern b.c., warmer than the rest of the province. We will see similar temperatures in port nelson. Lots of sunshine expected for the B.C. coast today with that sun spilling offer the boundary in alberta. Central communities are seeing some rainfall. Showers in southern manitoba. And then this front and a lot of cloud associated with it moving eastward across québec this morning. Thunderstorms slowly weakening. But still something to factor in. Reduced visibility as the storms are moving through. In behind that, the showers in manitoba. This moisture coming up from montana. South dakota and north dakota prompting rainfall warning. 50 to 60 millimeters of rain expected. Enhancing by late tonight and through the day on friday and easing to showers on saturday. This is a soaking rain in an area that already has high water levels through the red river valley. For ontario and québec, we will see the rain and for some, snow in labrador and northern ontario where accumulations are hitting 10 centimetres continue through today. It will be sunny in the south. But today, due to the fact that that low is centred farther north, the winds coming down from the northwest will cut the heat. It is also less humid. You will notice today in the shade, it's actually cooler. Yesterday wasn't so much cooler in the shade due to the fact that the air was so humid. With that decrease in humidity, that shade will provide some relief. You will notice along the lake shore, it feels cooler. Overnight tonight into tomorrow morning, that heavy rain does continue in areas of southern manitoba. North dakota as well gets hammered by that rainfall. We will see the risk of thunderstorms in the U.S. midwest once again for friday afternoon. That front barrels eastward. Friday overnight into saturday will be an incredibly challenging day south of the border as the rainfall begins to ease through areas of northern manitoba and into northern ontario. Now that front is set to arrive in the south as we head into saturday morning. We will see a change in the long-range forecast. That's a look at your weather forecast. Now we will send it back to lindsey with tony award winner and star of the hit series broad city. >> Lindsey: it could be hard to capture new relationships. The brand-new movie "babes" does just that with honesty and authenticity and most importantly, humour. >> You don't have to do anything you don't want to do. >> I have your back no matter what.

>> Lindsey: alana glazer co-wrote and stars in the film. Which tackling pregnancy and childbirth. I am joined by ilana glazer. You co-wrote the script when you were anyly pregnant. I love how your character says she feels amazing. We watch her journey. Hilarious changes. How much did you draw on your own experience? >> I was pregnant at the time. Partnered with my husband for many years. And very different from my character. The movie is "babes" is about two best friends who are in two very different places in their lives. My character is single and free spirited and has no idea how incredibly hard it is to make a human and raise a human while her best friend played by michelle is married and has two kids and when my character gets pregnant from a one night stand, she decides to keep the baby and it tests their friendship. The first scene that you rolled, that was my character eden needing her best friend dawn. >> Lindsey: when you sent the script off to shop around, what was the response like? >> People either got this movie or they didn't. They never had seen a story about a woman choosing to be pregnant. Choosing to have a baby that was a hard comedy in this way. The people who didn't get it was like this is gross. >> Lindsey: were they men? It is so real to me. The conversations that you have. >> Exactly. I think that this story could seem blue or gross because it is coming from women and it's being spoken by women. To me, this is real. >> Lindsey: it's real, 100%. That plays so well. Michelle, speaking of playing well. Michelle plays your best friend. The two of you, the chemistry is wild. Did you have a long history with her? >> Michelle has been doing comedy for 23 years and I have been doing it for 18 years in new york. We have been friends for almost 20 years. She is so delightful and so funny. And we really share the same values in comedy. We don't have to make fun of somebody to be funny. We have been friends for so long. Making a movie together could go one way or the other. >> Lindsey: it's a good way. Even that opening sequence which is a good way to start the movie, I laughed so hard. She is the one in labour. You are at the movie. It is hysterical and it is so real. >> Thank you. >> Lindsey: I remember when I had my first baby, my husband still can't talk about it. He wanted to be uptown and the doctor had him downtown. He was like, I didn't want to be downtown. Like your character, there's a lot going on. And maybe some things were unexpected. You think you can plan for something, but not necessarily. >> My character thinks she will be cool with this birth, but she is horrified. >> Lindsey: this movie is hysterical. Ilana glazer, thank you so much for being here. >> Babes is in theatres across canada starting friday. >> Lindsey: thank you so much. Coming up everybody, the gift of walking one step at a time.
