Well, experts say we aren't out of the woods just yet. When it comes to a potential drought. The recent rain is making a big difference. Our summer soup reports. >> The recent rain is a welcome sight, especially for those monitoring the current water situation ahead of the summer. It definitely helps the outlook right now is better than that. It was, you know, a few months ago when the reservoir levels were were much lower. >> And so that it is a blessing that we, we've seen this moisture absolutely lethbridge receive nearly 90 millimetres of rain this month. >> As of wednesday, the old man river reservoir was sitting at 62% up from 40% 2 weeks ago. The normal is around 75%, both the st. Mary reservoir and waterson reservoir are over 60%, but still below the normal level of 70 to 83%. The province right now is trying to capture every drop that they can within the reservoir. And that's why we've seen the increase. The province's. >> He's only releasing the water that's necessary to meet requirements for for the river and for the users downstream. >> The rainfall is above average for the area with lethbridge receiving moisture on 11 out of 20 today, so far this month on average for the month of may. >> In lethbridge, we see a boat to us. 50 to 55 millimetres. So we're already above what we normally would see the whole month of may. And it's sort of building on what we saw, even in the months of march and april, that rain is proving beneficial to farmers after a dry winter. Federal finance minister chrystia freeland has asked the chief actuary to provide an estimate on how much alberta would be owed if it left the cpp. Alberta finance minister nate horner says the province is still waiting for that number and will gauge public interest once they get it. Alberta has signed an agreement with the federal government aimed at improving care for seniors. Our seniors are the foundation of this great province of this great country. >> And to we need to do everything we can to make sure that they can age in place, that they can have the dignity of life as they get older. The federal government will provide 627 million dollars. The money will support specific initiatives outlined in the province's 5 year action plan, including >> Expanding workforce training enforcement of quality and safety in continuing care homes and enhanced home care infrastructure. The alberta government estimates then the next 22 years, one in every 5 albertans will be 65 years of age or older. Police in alberta say they are seeing an increase in the grandparent scam and they're encouraging everyone to warn the seniors in their life. Calgary investigators releasing this video today showing one victim who lost thousands of dollars. Police say victims typically receive a call from someone posing as a loved one, saying they've been arrested and need money immediately. Victim is asked to hand over the money to a person posing as a police officer or lawyer. And if they refuse, they're often threatened into compliance in calgary alone. Police say since january, they've received 32 reports of the scam. 21 seniors fell for it and lost a total of $180,000. The 31 year-old man wanted by lethbridge police has turned himself in. So where caan was wanted for failing to comply with an order stemming from being convicted for interference and invitation to touching. The new edition is coming to the rcmp's classic red serge uniform. Officers will now be allowed to wear a traditional indigenous ribbon skirt with their surge. The rcmp commissioner says the skirt is meant to symbolize the mounties commitment to reconciliation and to build bridges between first nations and the police force. Officers are also allowed to incorporate eagle feathers and metis sash to their uniform. The children of saint martha school held its annual community powwow today, marking the 20th anniversary of when it was first held. Students and staff have the opportunity to take and different kinds of dancing and drumming students from children and saint martha and other schools were even able to perform. Organizers told the crowd about the history of the performances and where they come from. It's becoming a bank students and staff really look forward to. We love to invite our community and all of our students participate. We believe in sharing our culture. >> And celebrating it for everyone. It's fnmi for also first nations metis and inuit education for everyone. >> The school believes events like this can be a good learning experience for indigenous and non-indigenous students. Students at our lady of the assumption will be learning in a different way next year. The lethbridge school is transitioning to international baccalaureate primary year's programming. Now our lady of the assumption is the first school south of calgary to do it. The program is designed to foster a child's love of learning that teach them to be inquisitive. Students took part in activities that would be similar to what they'll be taught next year, including drumming learning danced around the world and playing different games in different languages. >> We aim to teach them skills that are universally applicable. So those are skills like inquiring asking questions, thinking critically being creative, communicating clearly. All of those things are the things that are going to let them be adoptive and work towards being successful. Whatever the future may bring. The program typically require students and families to pay fees to take part.
