Finding that perfect go-to skin care product that you’ll use until you die is harder than getting tickets to The Eras Tour. When you finally discover something good enough to be passed down for generations, never let go.

For me, that skin care product is the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. After giving me the super fun “bodies go through changes” talk, my mom handed me my first deodorant stick and bought me my very first bottle of the Cetaphil cleanser, just as her mother did for her in the 1960s. None of us have ever strayed from the iconic bottle.

Since then, I’ve used the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser daily. No matter if I have angry, red hormonal acne or a gnarly sunburn, the Cetaphil cleanser does its job to restore my irritated face. It’s also effectively removed my makeup, even through the full-face look of 2016. I know, wild.

Developed for the most sensitive of sensitive skin (hi, me, my mom and my grandma!), the Cetaphil cleanser is fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. Key ingredients include hydrating glycerin and niacinamide. Basically, it’s cleared for anyone with dermatitis, rosacea, eczema and acne-prone skin.

Per the brand, the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser soothes and reinforces the skin’s barrier by hydrating as it cleanses. It’s also clinically proven to gently remove dirt, makeup and impurities without stripping skin.

Another reason I keep going back to it — besides the neverending parade of gold stars from my dermatologists — is the affordable price point. I’ll spend $100 on an effective serum, but you’ll never catch me spending more than $20 on a cleanser.

It’s super important to remember that reviews for skin care are entirely subjective. Everyone’s skin is different! What works for three generations of women who share genetics may not work for you. But, if you’re curious, the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser has racked up a 4.6-out-of-5-star rating from Amazon shoppers.

Like me, a lot of Amazon shoppers mention that this has been their go-to cleanser for years, and they’ll never swap. One reviewer even mentions that a dermatologist recommended it to them in the early 80s.

Meanwhile, an Amazon shopper who just started using the Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser wrote, “When I started to use this face wash, immediately, my usual dry tight skin became soft after rinsing off the face wash. Within a week, all my breakouts and irritations disappeared, and my skin is now less dry than before.”

As I said, everyone’s skin is different. But if you’re dealing with stressed-out, irritated, itchy or acne-prone skin, it’s always best to get back to basics — and stay that way. Hey, it’s worked for the three of us for decades, so there has to be something there.
